I~.r+ 1 ( ) Report of Committee on Education 1950-51 Meetings of the Committee were held on December 19, 1950, March 1, May 22, and September 22, 1951. The University has been fortunate to have had the services of two visiting pro-fessors this year through a Fulbright grant. Dr. Glenn A. Bakkum of Oregon State College was in Cairo for the second semester and rendered service in the field of sociology. Miss Ethel M. Fair was appointed visiting librarian and has given val-uable assistance in appraising our present library facilities and in building for future services; grant for Miss Fair has been renewed for 1951-52. Dr. E. G. Kaufman, President of Bethel College, Kansas, spent his sabbatical in Cairo teaching in the department of philosophy and religion under a special one-year contraot. For the coming year, two additional appointments have been approved by the U.S. Educational Foundation in Egypt, and the University will have the services of the following eminent educationalists without financial cost: Dr. Thomas E. McMullin, Vice Dean of the School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. A. Gordon Nelson of Cornell University. These Fulbright appointments are important to the life of A.U.C. not only be-cause of the services rendered in the field of teaching but also because of the injection of fresh up-to-date American ideas into the programs of the various de-partments. Under date of November 2, 1950, Dr. Badeau suggested re-appointment of Dr. Butrus Abdel Malek to the staff of the School of Oriental Studies under a five-year semi-permanent o ontraot . Action was taken by the Committee per Recommendation #1. Appointment of Harrell F. Beok to the permanent staff for second term was ap-proved, it being noted that Mr. Beck plans to be married in Cairo in December and will therefore enter into the financial regulations covering married members of the staff. After an extensive search for a replacement for Dr. Smith in philosophy and re-ligion on the permanent staff, the Committee approved the appointment of Arthur M. Brown. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Dartmouth (1942) and of Union Theological Seminary (1949) . He continued graduate work at Union and Columbia University and is preparing his doctoral dissertation. Sinoe his father was on the staff of the American University of Beirut, he has lived in the Near East and has a knowledge of Arabic . Mrs. Brown is also an exceptional person, and it is felt that these two young people have an unusual contribution to make to the life of the University. A three-year appointment approved by the Committee, after interviews with vari-ous members of the Board is that of Donald F. Shaw to teach English, history, philosophy and religion. Mr. Shaw has been assistant minister at Sewiokley Presbyterian Church and is well known to Mr. Harbison. ~.
