Appendix to Page 159 (25) Arabic language examinations are first required to sit for an examination over a set list of Islamics readings. Success in these examinations has been re-quired before a student has been able to sit for language examinations. This is a requirement we are happy to have re-instituted; the cooperation of the students in this respect has been extraordinary. VII - Publications - A new edition of Dr. Elder's Arabic Grammar is now being printed and we hope that copies of the volume will be available from mid-September. Atalla Effendi Athanasius's Nerical Handbook has been ordered printed by the Publica-tions Committee and first proofs from the Nile P, :fission Press are expecëci soon. Dr. Butrus has been charged with the responsibility of seeing the latter volume through the press, Dr. Elder and I with the former. VIII - Grades - By Faculty action the old grading system used in the School has been abolished and hereafter we shall be using the system which has becom standard throughout the institution: A (excellent); B (good); C (average); D (Below average but passing); F (failure). IX - Examinations - Arabic language examinations were offered in January and June; various special exminati ons have been offered for irregular students - in all cases, except cne, to students enrolled in thschool. The prerequisite Islamics examinations were offered to eighteen students in January and seventeen in June. The latter examinations are offered about a month before the language examinations. This year an Y.A. thesis examination was organized in the interest of Ahmad Effendi Hassan, candidate for the degree of Master of Arts in the Arabic langugage and literature. Examiners were: Professor Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, professor of Islamic History, Fouad I University (and chancellor-designate of Mohammed Aly University, Assiut), external examiner; Dr. I3ui'us, chief examiner; Dr. Schoonover, Dr. Howard, Dr. Elder, and President Badeau and 1.r. Beck, members ex officio. X - Master of Arts Degree - The successful candidacy of Ahmad Effendi Hassan, librarian of Peshawar College, NWF Province, Pakistan, for the degree of M.A. in Arabic language and literature should be noted here. Full details of his work may be found elsewhere. But it is an honour for the School of Oriental Studies to have been able to offer the first graduate studies and degree in the University.
