RESOLUTION IN WPvi0RY OF DR. MoCLENAHAN WHO DIED NOVENBER 8, 1949 9 4 The Board of Trustees records with deep sorrow the death of Dr. Robert Stewart YLClenahan on November 8, 1949. At the same time we record our great gratitude to God for the splendid service that Dr. M Clenahan rendered to the Near East, and to Egypt in particular, in association with the American University at Cairo. Coming from the presidency of Assiut College, which he served for twenty-two years, he joined in launching the new Christian University in Cairo in association with Dr. Charles F. Watson, with whom, and others, he had been active during the planning stage. His first work as Dean was to organize the College of Arts and Sciences while he labored with equal devotion to promote the University's other departments as they were organised; the School of Oriental Studies, the Division of Extension and the Department of Education. Following a period of eye affliction, during which he was obliged to resign the College deanship, he returned first as Dean of the University and then as Dean of the School of Oriental Studies, where for seven years he did constructive work in promoting the study of oriental languages and Islamics, and where the present beautiful building was erected in his honor. For a period of some eighteen years, 1921-1939, he was Chair-man of the important Committee on Missions and Government of the Egypt Inter- Nission Council. He retired from active service in 1939 at the age of 68, returning to the United States where he continued to work with undiminished enthusiasm in promoting the interests of the University. In recognition of his great contribution to Egypt as an outstand-ing educator and personality, the decoration of the Order of Ismail III was conferred upon him in 1946 by King Farouk, acting through his Majesty's Ambassador in Washington. Many are the men and women of Egypt, older and younger, who look back to their years of association with this great schoolmaster and Christian personality and speak in tones of deep affection and undying gratitude for the life of Dr. MoClenahan. To his colleagues on the staff in Egypt and in the administration in America "Dr. R.S." leaves a mevary of warm and sympathetic friendship and of admiration for undefeated courage in overcoming the disability created by his partial blindness. He was great for the personal human touch in all his relationships. As a skilled planner, a successful organizer and admin-istrator, devoted missionary and beloved teacher, he will over be remembered. Resolved that the foregoing Minute be entered on the record of proceedings of the Board of Trustees of the American University at Cairo and that a copy of the same be sent to Dr. William Uric McClenahan, Robert Wallace Nbelenahan, Mrs. Helen Jeannette King, and Dr. John Lorimer McClenahan with the deep and sincere sympathy of the Trustees.
