SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL STUDIES A most surprising experience is to find that in spite of a war situation which reduced materially the number of missionary recruits, the total enrolment of students derived from other sources increased so that where last year there were but 80 students, this year we had 120. It is true that many of these represented only superficial and interrupted language study, so that where a year ago we gave but 5415. Naturally the army and official classes who consti-tuted one half our enrolment found their plans for study frequently disarranged by war developments. The majority studied Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, but Pales-tinian Arabic, Turkish and even Persian were called for. The School made a consider'.ble contribution to tiffe general public during the past winter through two courses of lectures. The first course of six lectures were,given by Dr. E. E. Elder on "The Khalifate" drew, among others, some Moslem Indian officers in the Army. The second course of six lectures by six different lecturers covered the following topics: What the Modern World owes to Ancient Egypt The Folk Music of Egypt Monasticism in Egypt and the early Coptic Church The Aden Protectorate The Senoussis What the Modern World owes to Arabic Civilization. Mr. Gordon continues absent and the entire work of administration has fallen on Dean Adams, while Dr. Elder has generously cooperated in teaching. The death of Dr. Enderlin, a former member of the staff, occurred in Germany on July 15, 1940. The School of Oriental Studies is the one unit of the American University definitely serving foreigners wishing to learn Arabic and become acquainted with Islamic history, theology and culture. For this reason, it has been more seriously affected by the war than the other three units of the University. Obviously it must await the termination of the war before its more settled policy and its future opportunities for service can be fully determined, but it is most gratify
