Letter Expressing Views on Problem of Upper Colorado Project

Letter: From Congressman Stewart Udall, to E.A. Thomas, Chairman, April 30, 1955 (thermofax), page 3-3- As I understand it, there is some question at the present time whether the Bureau will eventually run transmission grid lines to connect up with its present lines in west-central Arizona. This matter is so important for the future of Arizona that I want to urge the authority to indicate now to the Bureau of Reclamation that if it does not plan to establish lines to join up with its present transmission system in Arizona, the Arizona Power Authority intends to run its own lines to the Glen Canyon site in order to secure a share of the power generated on the upper Colorado. I do not know whether your authority is now contemplating such action, but I was disturbed to learn here that to date you have taken no steps to get Arizona into the Glen Canyon power picture. It seems to me that unless there are good reasons why some other course should be taken, your agency might be subjected to criticsism by the citizens of our state if, due to insection, we should forfeit our clear rights to a substantial quantity of this power. I am sending a copy of this letter to the other commissioners and to Governor McFarland so that they will be fully advised of these facts and my own point of view on this matter.
