acquired and developed for these purposes. The stream reaches extend 35 miles below Helena Dam site on Trinity River and 24 miles below Eltapom Dam site on the South Fork Trinity River. Large sections of these strips are in Six Rivers and Trinity National Forests. Other sections, excluded from consideration, are devoted to essential public uses or established private developments. In total, 3,500 acres along the Trinity River and 2,400 acres along the South Fork Trinity, would be needed. Estimated costs are $700,000 and $480,000, respectively. Development of the fish habitat within these strips would require placement of clean gravels of proper size gradation to a depth of 3 feet within the normal channel over about 20 percent of the length of these stream reaches. Costs of such gravel placement are estimated to be $3,000,000 on the Trinity River and $2,000,000 on the South Fork Trinity River. Maintenance and replenishment of the gravels would be required at intervals of about 7 years with annual costs estimated at $100,000 on the Trinity River and $75,000 on the South Fork Trinity River. Improvement of fisherman access, over that resulting from the fish habitat development, by construction of trails, roads, and parking sites is considered desirable. However, detailed field studies will be required to select sites and estimate costs, and it is expected that the Forest Service which would assume control of any acquired lands, as provided in the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, would also assume responsibility for such improvement. The total costs of fish habitat replacement, including land acquisition and initial gravel placement in relation to the Trinity River Project is estimated to be $3,700,000. For the South Fork Trinity River Project, the total cost is estimated at $2,480,000 Wildlife Habitat Replacement Essentially all of the 15,700 acres of land, exclusive of river channel and roads, that would be flooded by Helena Reservoir and the 11,350 acres which would be flooded by Eltapom Reservoir provide excellent habitat for deer. In addition, Helena Reservoir site supports small numbers of quails and gray squirrels and a few jackrabbits, blue grouse and mallard ducks. The Eltapom site also supports small numbers of quails and gray squirrels as well as a few bank-tailed pigeons and blue grouse.
