Amelia Ernestine was born in Victoria in 1873, a second child to Charles Frederick Kilian and his wife Amilie. She had a brother, Henry Otto, also born in Victoria in 1870. Amelia's twin siblings were born on 23 April 1876 in the Northern Territory. Her brother Henry Otto died from diabetes when he was almost 21. In 1895 Amelia was one of the 82 Northern Territory women who registered to vote. She was one of the youngest women to register at 21 and her occupation was listed as 'spinster'.
