The Roman Catholic curates in the 19th century were usually inexperienced, but keen and ambitious young priests, open to new proposals such as new confraternities. The welcome of their new ideas depended on the purposes and character of the parish priest. When a curate was allowed to organize and lead a religious association, it was a pure sign of the parish priest’s trust. These confraternities usually survived the disposition of the founder, so we can look at these organizations as the most durable “memorials” of the curates. The leading role offered great opportunities to build personal ties between curates and believers.
