Szent Márton tisztelete egy alföldi kun városban

Kunszentmárton, situated on the River Hármas-Körös, is a settlement from the age of the kings of the House Arpad. First it was mentioned in the 13th Century. Bela IV. gave the village to the Cum ans. Under the Turkish occupation the Cumanian inhabitants scattered. The village was repopulated by Jazygian settlers from Jászapáti around 1719. The veneration of St. Martin is still alive: the settlement bears the name of the saint as well as its church which was built in 1784. The baroque altar-piece was made in 1789 by John Czirkler, a painter from Eger (the diocese centre), the apprentice of the famous John Lucas Kracker. In 1910 the church was enriched by inner paintings. This was the year when the greatcoat-scene was painted to the middle of the triomphal arch. This scene also appears in the coat-of-arms of the town. There are five churchbells among which the largest one was renamed after St. Martin. The illustration of St. Martin sitting on his horse with the beggar in front of him on the seals of he town first appeared in 1667. After almost 300 years, the veneration of St. Martin is still alive in Kunszentmárton
