Genre: Origin narrative. Title: Pu Roja. A tale about ancestors, first arrivers Mbu and Benge who left mainland Flores (Roja, Ende) because of a volcanic eruption (and war/persecution by a Lionese tribe I heard told). On Palu'e they arrived att Watu pou (a rock that was a boat until arrival, or here, coconuts) like other walked around and named the island's different places, not unlike that found in other ancestor origin tales from the island. Sometimes they are uttered differently, or the place names within a village name are in another order, or mistaken or even named differently from one village to another. Recorded with an AT2020 mic in the home of Lakimosa Bangu, kampong Woto, early afternoon 5 Feb 2015, upon my first visit to Woto. I came with Petrus Tanga whom I had talked to and recorded a few days before. We were about a dozen people chatting outside for a couple of hours, getting to know each other, and waiting for lakimosa Bangu to recover from a night of ritual wake with palm gin.
