ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY,Jamaica Plain, Mass., February 3, 1898.My dear Muir:I am sorry to say that the man in Washington who makes the transparencies reports that that picture of the Sugar Pine is not good enough for his work. I am sorry but perhaps we shall be more successful another time; at any rate bear the matter in mind when you see photographs of California trees.I have this morning received your picture in the Critic. It is one of the best I have ever seen of any one. I must try and get an original. I am glad to see that you are credited with having made you glacier.Faithfully yours,C.S.
