ARNOLD ARBORETUM HARVARD UNIVERSITY,Jamaica Plain, Mass, July 8, 1898.My dear Muir:I have yours of June 31st--many thanks for your kind and appreciative words, few such come my way, but plenty of kicks.Thank heaven I the forest reservations are safe as far as the land goes for another year. pinchot, of cource, in the Department of Agriculture will do a great deal of harm, but I am in hopes he will soon wind himself up. we must combat where there is opportunity the idea that Pasturage does no harm to forest, and we must fight to the [illegible] the scheme of political bummers for forest protectors.Abies magnifica is still a thorn in the flesh. The last thing which has happened is the loss of Mr. Faxon\u27s drawing of your flowering specimens on the Bourgogne, as well as his drawing of the cone of the mr. shasta from. Still beyond the delay and the irksomeness of having to redraw these two complicated and difficult Plates,the matter is not serious.Canby seems alive to our trip.
