Teaching Speaking Through Act-Out Activity: A Case Study at Tenth Grade in SMKN 10 Malang

TESL, M.Pd.Keywords: teaching speaking, act-out activity, vocational students.The purpose of this study is to improve the students’ speaking ability whether the strategy that the teacher used to teach speaking can be successful or not for tenth graders in SMKN 10 Malang. The teacher used act-out activity as the teaching strategy to teach speaking. The theme of the story that the teacher used is about folktales. It was related to the basic competence 3.9 and 4.15 of the second semester syllabus used for the tenth graders in SMKN 1O Malang. The vocational students are prepared to have specific occupation after they graduated. Some of them may take part in international business and industries. Thus, mastering English speaking is important. Through this strategy, students are expected to increase their ability of speaking.This study is classified into descriptive qualitative research design because it describes and observes the research objects. This study is in the form of case study of teaching speaking through act-out activity for tenth graders in SMKN 10 Malang. In this study, the role of the researcher is as a data collector in the process of teaching and learning. The researcher uses observation checklist and questionnaire to collect the data. The sources of data are students of English classes at tenth grade and one teacher of SMKN 10 Malang who teaches English in tenth grade. The findings of the study are obtained based on the result of the observation of the research objects and analysis of the result of the observation. Based on the result of this study, the act-out activity that the teacher used as teaching strategy to teach speaking is have not appropriate enough to students. Although this strategy actually can help students increase their ability of speaking but, they could not implement it into real communication because they do not know the purpose of this activity. They do not maximize their learning of speaking. The deficiency of interaction between teacher and students become a factor why the students could not increase and develop their speaking skill. Thus, the teacher should give more attention to the needs of students learning in class. The students also should be more active in class to increase and develop their speaking skill.
