A STUDY ON THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL AT XII-LANGUAGE PROGRAM OF SMA NEGERI 1 LAWANG

Ed Keywords: teaching, speaking, speaking class This study was conducted to describe the implementation of the teaching of English speaking skill at XII-language program at SMA Negeri 1 Lawang which located at jalan Pramuka no 152 Lawang. The subject involves two teachers and twenty seven students consisting of twenty six female students and one male student. This study used a descriptive-qualitative design. To collect the relevant data, some instruments were used, among others observation protocol, field notes, interview guides and students' questionnaire. The data were collected from September 11th to October 16th 2014. The findings of this study were as follows. (1) The purpose of the teaching of speaking skill to the speaking class at XII-language program were to teach the students to be able to speak English, to give the students more time to practice their English speaking skill, and to support the development of students speaking ability. (2) The activities conducted in the speaking class were students’ presentation, prepared talks, retelling an article from a magazine, acting games, and role play. (3) The students' problems in the speaking class concerned language problems such as grammar, lack of vocabulary and pronunciation and affective factors such as feeling shy and unconfident. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that the English teachers create more interesting activities so that the students, especially those who are feeling shy and unconfident are more motivated to speak. The school management, need to provide proper facilities for the improvement of the teaching of the speaking skill. Future researchers are suggested to conduct other studies with more in-depth research on the aspects of a speaking class program particularly on the assessment aspect
