La città che non c’è. Bambini, natura e ambiente urbano nella letteratura per l’infanzia

The so-called ‘classics’ of Children’s Literature – written during the massive process of urbanization in the Western world – almost never have a city as their background. On the contrary, they tend to radicalize the link between childhood and the natural landscape as the only condition for childhood to be such. The Romantic legacy associating the child to nature makes it impossible for us to see children comfortably inhabiting the city and has even brought – in the massively urbanized world of our times – some scholars to theorize the disappearance of childhood. If we want to imagine (and hopefully design) cities that can actually be dealt with by children, we have to become aware of the symbolic projections that, as a culture, we tend to associate to children, and we have to start to ‘naturalize’ their presence also in the urban, as some authors and illustrators of children’s books do.I ‘classici’ della letteratura per l’infanzia – scritti durante il grande processo di urbanizzazione nel mondo occidentale – non sono quasi mai ambientati in città, e anzi radicalizzano il legame tra infanzia e ambiente naturale come quello che, solo, consente all’infanzia di essere fino in fondo sé stessa. L’eredità romantica che associa il bambino alla natura ci rende impossibile pensare ai bambini come a proprio agio in città ed è ciò che forse ha portato molti intellettuali a sostenere, nel mondo contemporaneo quasi totalmente urbanizzato, l’idea della fine dell’infanzia. Se vogliamo immaginare (e auspicabilmente progettare) città che siano anche a misura dell’infanzia, occorre prendere coscienza delle proiezioni simboliche che, come cultura, ancora tendiamo ad associare ai bambini, provando a ‘naturalizzare’ la loro presenza anche negli ambienti urbani, come fanno alcuni autori e illustratori di libri per l’infanzia
