The day has come to gather his beasts, From his fall pasture just of to the east. Brown Bob snaps suddenly at some unknown pest, For the next few days he’ll get no rest. Laying around has taken it’s toll, Old Bob resembles a jelly roll. This day, the rancher will pregnancy test, And tomorrow he’ll be an auction mart guest, His long hours of work in the cold and the snow, All boil down to this two day show. The gather starts smoothly but ends miserably at best. A hurricane wind swoops in from the west. A dirty crew stands with hands on their hips, Each face has a circle from licking their lips. As the cattleman moves in to begin the sort, A cow moves forward and gives a snort. It’s the brockle-face brute he has come to dispise, And her brockle-face calf with it’s wild eyes. The sorting went well, with only minimal yellin’, Until the brockle-face cow kicked Bob in the melon. To say Bob got mad is to understate, With Bob swinging on her tail, she made a new gate. After repairing the damage made by the brute, The cattle are loaded into the chute. His neighbor, the preg-tester, will let him know Who gets to stay and who will go. The very first cow give his nerves a test, She comes up dry and she was one of his best. An emotional rollercoaster, he rides all day, Some good cows will go, others will stay. The brockle-face brute, as if by design, Is the last cow in the preg-test line. No amount of persuation will make her go in, Until ol’ Bob gets hold of that tail again. He has always considered selling this cow, But her early due date means he’ll keep her now. The testing is done and the results now show, That, out of 100, only 7 will go. The next day he arrives at the auction mart, Only minutes before the sale will start. He hopes and prays that his calves are bought, But there aren’t many trucks in that parking lot. He decides to eat first, and to his disbelief, The auction mart burgers aren't made of beef. The sale is started by the auctioneers, Attempting to sell a pen full of steers. The rhythmic chatter and a tapping pen, Begin to draw the buyers in. The rancher waves at a friend and is sorry he did. For he has just became the highest bid. With the sale of his calves about to start, The rancher tries to control his pounding heart. Even though the farmer is not a fretter, He wishes he understood the auctioneer better. The bidding slows and with a pounding pen, The auctioneer says "Sold for $1.10!" Smaller groups begin to come through, And the buyers manage to steal a few. To frozen ears and tails, there is strong aversion, Does it somehow affect their feed conversion? About this sale, the rancher should feel good, But he never feels he’s done as well as he could. Down to the office, for his cheque he will need, Since he has already ordered next year’s feed. Tomorrow, at the coffee shop where his neighbours convene, His calves will have sold for $1.15.VILLAGE OF MILO The special meeting of the Village of Milo was held on Monday, October 7, 1991 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Office. Present were Mayor Phillips, Councillors Middlestead and Umscheid, Municipal Administrator Lynda Cyr and guests Keith Godkin and John Ivers from the Queens­town Seed Cleaning Plant. The minutes of the meeting held on September 11, 1991 were read. Mayor Phillips moved the adoption of these minutes. CARRIED. By-Law #292 was presented to Council for reading. The By-Law authorizes the Village to amend By-Law #280 being the water deposit By-Law of the Village. Mayor Phillips moved first reading. CARRIED. Councillor Middlestead moved second reading. CARRIED. Mayor Phillips moved the By-Law be given a third and final reading at this meet­ing . CARRIED UNANIMOUS. Councillor Middlestead moved third reading of By-Law #292. CARRIED. Keith Godkin and John Ivers attended the meeting on behalf of the Queenstown Seed Cleaning Plant. They were wondering about getting water from the Village to the seed plant that is being built by the County Shop. They suggested running a 2 or 2£" pipe off the main line on Second Street North and running it parallel with the road to the highway. Work will not commence on this until next summer. It was stated that they would pay commercial rates and be responsible for any problems that might arise from the water line. Council sees no problem with this suggestion. An agreement will be drawn up and signed by both parties at the time of construction. Lynda Cyr said she had talked to Mrs. Findlay about signing the transfer for the property she is selling to the Village. It appears that Mrs. Findlay has mislaid or lost the title. She will be contacting the Village as soon as she finds it or else gets a new one. Councillor Middlestead reported on the Solid Waste Management Authority. The letter from Willow Creek Regional Solid Waste was read. They are wanting to do a feasibility study on incineration which will cost 15<? per capita. Council has no problem with the concept but feel they need some concrete figures before any committment is made. Mayor Phillips informed Council Brent Kjinserdahl is quitting as of October 31/ 91o An advertisement is to be put in the Vulcan Advocate, Can Opener and posted in the Village advertising for someone to take the job. A letter was received from Hank Leeferink in regards to the 911 system they are hoping to get started for the rural areas. A letter is to be sent saying the Village is in agreement with the idea and would appreciate any new material in regards to this. Mayor Phillips asked if a letter could be sent to Mrs. Sandy Chrapko, Town of Vulcan Administrator, advising that the Village of Milo wishes to resubmit R.R.I.P. on its behalf. A letter is also to be sent to Gloria Treiber, of the Economic Development Committee, approving the request for B.I.A.C. funding for the marketing program. The letter from Mr. Ash Channon in regards to the R.V. Park to be built near the lake was read. He asked for prices in regards to obtaining water and having sewer hauled. Council would like to know how many gallons per day would be required. They also would like to see some blue prints and concrete facts. At this time they are not prepared to quote any prices until they know the full scope of the facility as far as water and sewer are concerned.~ T- Council discussed the building permit by-law which had been tabled from last month s meeting. No word has been received from Arrowwood in regards to this. Lynda Cyr is to contact Lomond and Cluny and see what they are doing in this situa­tion. Mayor Phillips said Mrs. Margaret Umscheid would be bringing in a cheque to cover the loss of the beer gardens and fireworks on behalf of the Milo Anniversary Committee. Mayor Phillips said he still has some money to be deposited for the beer that has been sold. Mayor Phillips declared an interest in the following account of $ 73.33 with L.H. and Sons Ltd and refrained from voting and discussion thereon. We have finished a miles contest with other clubs and our club walked a total of 626.5 miles from June 1 to August 1. A new "Bingo” contest has now started and will run for 13 weeks. On September 5, Marilyn Nelson reached 17 years as a KGPS, Congratulations! Congratulations also to Carol Vooys for the best three month loser for July, August and September. She also was the best loser for September. Our best loser for October was Laureen, so congratulations to her as well. We are sorry to lose Frances as one of our members and are happy to welcome Julie back with us. A delicious buffet mea! was prepared by a local catering group. The following awards were presented to the ormer Milo students who attended CCHS in the 1990-91 term. del Card presented Dan Francis with a certificate for Work Experience 35. Lion John Ivers presented Louise Winch with a plaque and a cheque to the Milo student for achieving the highest average in the advanced diploma program in grade 12. Milo Parent-Teacher Group president, Carol Robertson, presented a certificate and a cheque to the following students from Milo who achieved the highest average with at least a 75% average in the Advanced diploma or general diploma program in the 1990-91 term. Grade 11 advanced diploma - Aaron Ivers, grade 12 general diploma - Dan Fancis and rade 12 advance diploma - Louise Winch, an Francis is presently upgrading at CCHS and Louise Winch is attending SAIT in Calgary taking Dental Assisina. Jan. 6 - Back to School TRY THIS 1/2 cup each of diced carrot, potato, celery 1/4 cup cabbage 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups boiling water 1 medium onion, diced 1 tablespoon fat 2 cups beef stock (from boiled beef bones) 1*1 /2 cups cooked tomatoes 2 teaspoons chopped parsley (if fresh parsley isn't available use half as much dried parsley) 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Saute all vegetables in fat. Add hot water and simmer until vegetables are partially cooked. Add stock and seasonings and finish cooking. Christmas trees will be sold again and should be available at the school the first part of December. The Junior High boys & girls would like to play basketball. A delicious buffer supper was prepared by Joanne Belanger. Due to the inclimate weather a few of the ropers did not attend. Shannon Ivan of Taber and Bruce Broderson of Vauxhall presented the winning ropers with thep| beautiful tack and buckles. Jarrett Helland won 4th header in the Vauxhall club.
