ACRE. How did we get “acre” as a measure of land? The word “acre” originally meant a field - any field. But in the reign of Edward 1 of England an exact definition was set as the amount of land a team of oxen could plow in a day - 40 poles long by 4 broad, or 4840 yards. DOG DAYS. Why are hot summer days called “dog days”? Because the ancient Romans believed that the six or eight hottest days of the summer were caused by the Dog Star, Sirius’ rising with the sun and adding its heat to the day. They called these days cuniculares dies - “dog days.”“Burt's Point of View ” Why is it that people, or critics, have to always find something wrong with whatever or whoever? No matter what it is in any walk of life, “ That is stupid, what were they thinking off when they came up with that idea, what s wrong with the way things were, he, or she, was only looking to make a profit, and so on”. When you look for the good, the had isn't so had. Take for example, a miner, there is a lot of unwanted before the good is discovered, is the mine condemned because of more dirt than good? You probably get the picture by now. First, I'll take the dangerous new style of energy saving fiorescent light bulbs. I understand they contain traces of mercury, which we have been drilled is very dangerous to our health. If a person were to eat one, mercury would not be the cause of their death. Even if a bulb were to accidentally break in our surroundings, there is by far less chance a human body would suffer from it than all the chemicals and pollution we are exposed to every day. With many years of studying and research, Vm sure their dangers were taken into consideration. Compared to the old fashioned incandescent light bulbs, switching bulbs in my small household would save very little, but every kWh helps. Even I can find a disadvantage with them, they don ’t come on instantly. “Big hairy deal”! Fiorescent tubes are by far much larger than smaller new style of bulbs; therefore the health hazard is greatly increased. Now if their widely use were banded, electricity itself might as well be cut off. People could get hurt from electrical shock, hurt from an electric motor driven instrument or piece of machinery, and so on. For now, we should be satisfied with the luxury we take for granted. Life depends on electricity in all walks of life, “So There”! What about the popular and convenient use of the cell phones? Personally, in my opinion, I would say its advantages outnumber its disadvantages, or dangerous points, such as radiation, distraction white driving and the outrageous phone bills if not kept under control. Business wise, I would say it is a necessity while away from the office. Also, getting in touch with another person when they are on the go or, for an emergency. Sure, they have their disadvantages and risk, but their advantages by far outnumber them. The first cell phone I got was a disappointment, rolled Jr. ’s truck on the way to their farm and proceeded to phone him for assistance. Disappointed when on the display it said "No Service”. But that doesn't always happen, that will improve someday.Another innovation, the highways, billions of taxpayer’s dollars is spent on such. Myself, they are quite an improvement since the days of narrow dirt roads and plenty of annoying dangerous turns. Mind-ya, some people find fault, or will look for faults, with progress of some sort whatsoever. And another necessity in one’s life, medication to reduce one’s pains or to help health situations have numerous possible after effect outnumbering their good qualities, according to their write up that is. In my opinion, it’s the bright or positive side that is a big plus. I had my troubles with cell phones, washing machines and such but I realize it’s all part of progress and have to accept what comes along.
