Being a Councilor is a tough enough job without having to work with one foot placed over your ear, and another foot firmly in your mouth - yet our esteemed representatives seem to have achieved this. Our present Council seems to have secret university degrees in Construction Engineering, Home Renovation Safety, Psychology and Sociology in addition to Urban Planning. Otherwise how could they have come to their “informed decision” regarding the sale and relocation of the Union Jack School house? Does the Council have technical reasons that prove the structure is not now, and can never be made habitable? Do they also have unique psychic abilities that enable them to know in their hearts the needs of any small farmer regarding the necessity to retain hired help? We should be proud for example, that Hutterites enjoy the freedom of their lifestyle in this Province without having to prove that every structure and person living on their property has an economic justification. Can we not extend this right of individual freedom to the small farmer as well? During my history of 18 years as a County Councilor I tried to place the interests of the ratepayer first, and what may or may not serve the County second. There are many honest productive citizens who pursue economic activities that are labour intensive beyond the so-called “norms” of ranching or farming, and these residents deserve to be left free of conformist small thinking. The economic and social growth of our County depends on our setting a fair policy that values individual rights, accepts change for the future and maintains respect for the past. Grant Lahd. Discussion opened for the floor. One resident commented they are in favor of the Bylaw being passed. Questions regarding Animal Control - who will pick up the animals and how much will it cost the Village & residents? Concerns regarding pets being destroyed if owners are away and unaware of their pet being impounded. Questions regarding stray cats - does/should licensing apply to cats? If so, will it create a problem with mice infestation? Majority of residents present would be in favor of licensing cats as well as dogs. Approximately 21 dogs in the village. Unknown number of cats. How are we able to regulate stray dogs from outside the village or can we? Bylaw was NOT passed at third reading. The Village of Milo will investigate Animal Control costs and what is included in any monthly fees; changes to bylaw to include licensing of cats; and the Village of Milo will arrange for a meeting with Vulcan Community Peace Officer for more information. It was stressed to the residents that the purpose of this bylaw is to have a guideline and to encourage responsibility for pets and to fellow residents. There will be a learning curve and a grace period for any infractions that may occur. Any previous readings will be rescinded and the Bylaw will be revised and will have first reading when available. 1st Street North Subdivision With the approval of annexation, an amendment to Land Use Bylaw #322 was drafted by Oldman River Regional Services Commission. Last week, I took my children to a restaurant. My six year old son asked if he could say grace. Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said “/ happen to know that was a great prayer”. “Really?” my son asked. “Cross my heart” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing) “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, 1 bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember for the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is good already.” A teenager brings her latest boyfriend home to meet her parents. They are shocked by his piercings, tattoos and hair cut. Later ,her mother says,’’Dear, he doesn’t seem to be a very nice boy.” “But he is”, the girl claimed, “If he wasn’t nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” mm****#M#****Mffl****mm****mm I was stopped for speeding while my four year old son, Damon was in the car, and he . Too much time, too much coffee: Hi Again! Things have been slow around here the last couple of months. I call it Rich Farmer Happy Time, which means that an amazing number of local citizens (in my view) have left for southern climes on the wings of Wheat Board cheques. Long suffering Brother-in-Law (and my partner in our weird 'Buddy Movie’ as related here) Grant was finally able to take a much deserved break after what could easily be called a train wreck in the winter of ‘08/09. Don’t tell anyone, but this left me lonely and suddenly with twice as much coffee in stock as I needed. The wonder of having the ‘G-Man’ (G can be for Grant, Grumpy etc. - I’ll pay actual money or custom baking for more good ones) as a friend is that I have a perfect foil for my ideas, theories and impressions. Not that he shoots everything down - more like injects occasional fatal doses of reality. But Grant’s been gone, so I’m going to give you a bit of personal history combined with things I’ve been able to leam without him. A Car Guy younger than sliced bread, but older than cassette tapes and radial tires... I grew up in Calgary, and used to sit on the bus going to and from school, and imagine what it would be like to own the various cars that drove by. I rated every single car, and rejected none. I was NOT fussy - I would have taken ANY car. A car represented freedom, which I eventually funded by working on the loading dock at the Sears store in Calgary. The first (and we all remember our first, don’t we?) was an early 60’s Mercury Comet 4-doon robin’s egg blue, six white mice, three on the tree, bench seat with fuzzy pile seat covers, and an AM radio with a custom reverb to the also custom extra speaker on the rear parcel shelf. Yes, all the luxury and performance you could get - for 5600. At this point I’m sure many kids are going ‘Reverb?’ Yes children, this is what the cool guys had in their car before something called ‘stereo’ was introduced. You see trick audio back then was something called 'high fidelity mono’ (no, not what you got from kissing only your girlfriend) with an adjustable delay to the back speaker that created (wait for it...) ‘concert hall sound’. The kind of sound you got if you held your concert in a concrete hockey area, and sat just slightly closer to the front than the back, so you could enjoy (?) the echo coming off the back wall. Or the sound you got in the auditorium at your school when they held dances. Parking with my girlfriend in the evening (Hi Nancy!) was enhanced by the addition of blue (we called them something else) lights under the dash, four full decades
