Gardening Like a Libertarian Story and photo by Mr. Tomato Are you a traditional gardener, bound by unwritten rules and narrow perspectives? Are you happy with a “nice” garden? Then this article isn't for you. Go elsewhere. This is about gardening freedom, about challenging outdated notions, about boldness and courage. And, above all, it's about gardening excitement and fun! Outdated notion #1: The Victoria Day long weekend in May is the time to plant your bedding plants. Who says? In fact, you can get a big colourful jump on the season and on your tradition- bound neighbours by planting a good many flowers a month or more before then. But, you ask, what about frost? Many of our favourites - petunias, snapdragons, dracena (spikes), gazanias, dusty miller, pansies, violas, alyssum, dianthus, verbena - easily survive heavy spring frosts and wind chills. Just be sure to harden them off first by exposing them to harsh outdoor conditions a little each day for a week before planting. Start the hardening process indoors by placing them next to drafty windows or aiming an electric fan in their direction for an hour or two a day. My best petunias have been the ones that were whipped around by snow and wind and minus-8-degree temperatures. That put them into a survival mode, growing short and stocky and producing lots of flower buds. What a show! Outdated notion #2: Mowing the lawn is a boring necessity with no redeeming aspects. Who says? If you like having lawn, you're going to have to mow it. But you can make it a more exhilarating experience by planting clumps of thyme and chives here and there in the lawn. They’ll stay dwarf and blend right in, but every time you mow them they'll release their wonderful bouquet of scents and take your mind off the boring pursuit you're engaged in. And, as a bonus, you can harvest thyme leaves to add to soups and stews to keep you young! (Thyme is a potent antioxidant.) Outdated notion #3: Your sidewalk leading to the entrance to your house, should be a straight, solid functional pathway. Who says? WHO SAYS? The straight functional sidewalk is a bane to our existence. Straight and functional may be the sidewalk leading to military barracks or to a government office. But when you step from the public sidewalk onto your property, you are stepping into your own private world, away from regimentation and regulation. If you don't feel differently the instant you step onto your property from the workaday world, then your garden isn't filling its function.The ancient Taoist philosophy of Feng Shui teaches us that a curving, winding path is better for the soul. Pebbled rounds work. So does staggering sidewalk slabs so they don't form a perfectly straight line. Think about how much better you feel when you're driving along a winding river road compared to straight streets. Outdated notion #4: Your front yard should be designed to come as close as possible to postcard beauty. Who says? Are you designing your front yard to look great in real estate ads? If you're not comfortable having a picnic or lazing around in your front yard, you're not making the most of the taxes you're paying on that land. Stand or sit in your front yard and imagine what would have to happen for you to feel comfortable there. Then do it! My favourite front yard would contain these elements: loads of large closely-spaced rocks with clutches of raspberries, coneflowers, rudbeckia, strawberries around and between; clumps of com, gladiolas, lilies; Nanking cherry shrubs here and there for just the right amount of height and for delicious sweet eating; dwarf Princess spirea shmbs for that “mountain” look; shredded bark pathways; a small round platform deck for lawn chairs; milkweed for Monarch butterflies; a sand pit for wiggling your toes in; cherry tomatoes for sweet nibbling; a splashing water feature. Isn't this the kind of garden you'd want to be in first thing in the morning and last thing at night? Can you say that now about your present front yard design? Outdated notion #5: You need a vegetable garden to be able to grow vegetables. Who says? Do vegetable seeds know where they are? Will they refuse to germinate if they're not planted in a formal vegetable garden? As soon as soil is soft enough this spring, push pea seeds around shrubs, in flower beds, into containers. Sprinkle lettuce and carrot seeds anywhere. Have fun finding the most outrageous, out-of-the-way places. Remember that Swiss chard Bright Lights with multicolored stems make a great addition to the flower bed. For quick, delightful, healthful eating, steam Swiss chard with chicken-flavoured Oxo powder, then thicken with com starch. Mmmm! Certainly much of your gardening this year will be based on tradition; we don't give up easily on the tried and true. But if you keep asking yourself the question “Why not?” you'll come up with some unique combination of plants or of planting or accessorizing of your own that will not only make you proud, but will challenge visiting gardeners to push the limits.
