Click on the link in the “Related Materials” field to access recent issues.A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff e or of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina February 8, 1980 HENNESSEE FAMILY GIFT WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT ATHLETICS A 400-acre tract of land worth in excess of $146,000 has been donated to WCU for use in support of the athletic program. The gift was made by Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Hennessee of Sylva last week to the Uni­versity's Development Foundation. The land, five miles east of Cherokee in the Shutin Creek area of Jackson County, is believed to be the largest single tract of land ever donated to the University. "We are especially pleased that Jack and Joan Hennessee have chosen to step for­ward with such a significant contribu­tion to Western Carolina University's athletic program," said Chancellor H.F. Robinson. "The Hennessees have long been friends and supporters of the Uni­versity and this gift underscores our shared commitment and dedication to make the athletic program favorably reflect on not only Western Carolina University, but the region and the state as well," Robinson said. Both Hennessee and his wife Joan have been involved in the lumber industry since 1951 and have been very active in church, civic and social organizations and service. Hennessee is vice chairman of the WCU Board of Trustees and serves on the board's property and buildings committee, executive committee and as an endowment furid trustee. Mrs. Hennessee, the former Joan Diehl, is a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and a 1951 graduate of the University of Ten­nessee, where she earned a bachelor's degree in both chemistry and clothing and textile retailing. "We love these mountains and these people," Mrs. Hennessee said. "We wanted to do something beneficial with the land and something to evidence our feelings for this area and the university." Hennessee said he hoped the sale of the land to establish a challenge would "stimu­late others in the region to provide the kind of assistance Western teams need to be competitive in the Southern Conference." Tentative plans call for the land to be sold and the proceeds used to establish a challenge to which others might respond. IBSEN'S "GHOSTS" WILL OPEN MONDAY Henrik Ibsen's drama "Ghosts" will be pre­sented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11-16 in WCU's Little Theatre. Director Allan Fox, stage manager of New York's Phoenix Theatre, will visit the University in conjunction with the opening of the play, which is the 1980 Josefina Niggli production in honor of the professor emeritus of the speech and theatre arts department. Fox will speak at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Little Theatre before attending the open­ing night performance. Afterward, he will critique the play. Admission to the play is $2 for adults, $1 for students, and 50 cents for children. Fox's lectures are free to the public but reservations are required for Monday night's production and critique. Reservations may be obtained by calling 227-7365. Tickets for the play are available at the box office in the Stillwell Building at WCU. MATUS MEMORIALS GOING TO CATHOLIC CENTER The Catholic Student Center is accepting memorials to the late Theodore P. "Ted" Matus, WCU associate professor of art, who was stricken at home and died unex­pectedly Feb. 1. A member of the WCU faculty since 1962, Matus had taught a wide range of art courses and earned a wide reputation as a studio artist in native crafts and woodca~ving, ceramics, and jewelry. His works in jewelry were especially acclaimed and he frequently drew on minerals and gems native to the mountain region for his creations, and encouraged their use by students. His works in silver, gold, and other precious metals have appeared in a number of art shows, including the N.C. Jewelers ~xhibition that just closed at WCU. Matus, 62, was actively engaged in art restoration work and frequently was called on to restore or repair valued art objects. One of his best known efforts was the restoration, amounting to a virtual rebuilding, of the statue of Christ for St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Asheville. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Matus grew up in New York City and graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. He earned his master's degree in art from Florida State University and also did graduate work at the University of Georgia. A veteran of World War II, he had travel­ed extensively and was a member of a WCU group that went to North Africa to ex­plore possible overseas teaching assign­ments for WCU students. A man of great culinary talents, Matus was a popular host who enjoyed preparing a wide variety of domestic and foreign dishes, but was especially adept at Polish cuisine. He was an avid gardener and spent much of his free time culti­vating azaleas, flowers, and vegetables. He is survived by his wife, Mim S. Matus of the WCU Office of Public Information; two daughters, one son, three brothers, one sister, and a granddaughter. -2- BLACK HISTORY WEEK SET FEB. 10-16 The University's observance of Black His­tory Week will get underway with a church service at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the First Baptist Church in Sylva. The Rev. Ed Wheeler of Atlanta will be the speaker. The service is in conjunction with a Black Campus Ministry Conference sponsored by the Baptist Student Union Feb. 8-10. A cinema festival will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Grandroom of the University Center. Dr. Alton Hornsby Jr., chairman of the history department of Morehouse College in Atlanta will speak at 7 p.m. Mon­day in the auditorium of the Natural Sciences Building. Hornsby .also will lecture in classes Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, career opportunities for black Americans will be the topic of a seminar at 3 p.m. in the Catamount Room of the University Center. Representatives from a number of Western North Carolina industries are scheduled to take part. Two films, "Gone Are the Days," (Purlie Victorious) and "Amazing Grace," will be shown beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hoey Auditorium. Two movies, "Slaves" and "Harriet Tubman," will be offered Wednesday at a time and place to be announced. On Thursday, Dr. Evan Firestone, head of the art department, will lecture on Afri­can art at 3 p.m. in the Catamount Room of the University Center. That evening, Amiri Baraka, formerly Leroi Jones, will discuss the history of the black liberation movement at 7:30 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. Dr. Kwasi Aduonum, a native of Ghana and authority on black music and dance, will conduct workshops for faculty, staff and students, at 9:30a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music/English Building. He also will perform at 7:30p.m. Friday in the Grandroom of the University Center. "Black Scholars," an exhibit sponsored by Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, will be on display in Hunter Library Feb. 10-29 in conjunction with Black History Week. Black History Week at WCU is sponsored by the Office of Student Development. FACULTY GRANT AWARDS ARE AVAILABLE Dr. Robert E. Stoltz, vice-chancellor for Academic Affairs, will award up to four grants of a maximum of $1,500 each this spring to faculty members. The instructional improvement grants will go to individual faculty members or groups of faculty members. They will be used to support projects speci­fically designed to improve the quality and effectiveness of instruction in a course or group of courses. The funds can be used for supplies, equipment, part-time help, or necessary travel. The awards will be made on a competitive basis. Deadline for applying for the grants is March 24. WCU HOSTS BAND CLINIC More than 300 student musicians from 26 Western North Carolina junior and senior high schools are expected at WCU Feb. 15- 16 for the Western District All-State Band Clinic. The student instrumentalists, who were selected in competitive auditions, will participate in two days of intensive rehearsals. They will present a gala concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, in Hoey Auditorium. On Friday, Feb. 15, the All-State band members will be entertained by WCU's Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. in the Music-English Recital Hall. NOTED MUSIC EDUCATOR WILL LECTURE Dr. Maurice Hinson, well-known music educator, author, and piano performer, will present a lecture and recital on 19th century American keyboard music at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Music­English Recital Hall. Dr. Hinson is visiting WCU for a piano workshop and Master Class which will be held Monday, Feb. 11, in the recital hall for piano teachers and music majors. -3- YOUMANS WINS NSF GRANT Dr. Hubert L. Youmans, WCU professor of chemistry, has been awarded a $15,080 grant from the National Science Founda­tion to support the University's Student Science Training Program. The program is a summer project of high­level science study for rising high school seniors with exceptional ability. It consists of laboratory experiences in microchemistry, microcomputers, and digital electronics. Thirty outstanding science students from high schools throughout the Eastern United States will be selected for the program, which Youmans directs. This will be the second summer for the Student Science Training Program on the WCU campus. Western was the only N.C. university to offer such a program last year. LUNCH A.~D TALK PROGRAM SCHEDULED Glenn Bottoms, WCU assistant professor of economics, will discuss "Comparison of Continuous and Homotopic Approaches to Compute Fixed Points" during a Lunch and Talk program at noon Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Room 334, Forsyth Building. AUDITIONS SCHEDULED FOR CHILDREN'S PLAY Auditions for the Touring Children's Theatre production of "Tarradiddle Tales" by Flora Atkin will be held Feb. 18 in the WCU Little Theatre. Scripts are available in Room 123 of Stillwell Building. Tenta­tive performance dates are March 20-21 and 27-28. APPALACHIAN FORUM WILL BE HELD AT MARS HILL The second in a series of Appalachian Issues Forums will be held at Mars Hill College Wednesday, Feb. 13. The forum on "Appala­chian Women and the Family" will include presentations by Dr. Sharon B. Lord, pro­fessor of educational psychology at the University of Tennessee. LEONARD (Marketing-Management) has been named associate editor of the abstract section of the Journal of Marketing. BETTY L. SIEGEL (dean, Education and Psychology) was selected an outstanding alumna by the Cumberland College Alumni Association for service to her alma mater. She received a plaque of appre­ciation at homecoming on November 17. WILMA B. COSPER (head, Home Economics) has been appointed a member of Gov. Hunt's "North Carolina Families" Task Force. She will join some 140 others in writing policy recommendations to accompany the North Carolina delegates to the White House Conference on Families in 1980. DANIEL K. SOUTHERN (director of medical technology, Nursing and Health Sciences) presented a continuing education program at the new Haywood County Hospital on Tuesday, January 8, as part of the Region I quarterly meeting of the North Carolina Medical Records Association. His topic, "It's Elementary, Dear Wat­son," dealt with the use of forensic medicine in the medical laboratory to unravel clues to crimes. ROY DOUTHITT (director, Cherokee Cen­ter) has been named to a steering committee for a technical assistance and training demonstration project to help resettle Indochinese refugees by identifying resource people to help them adjust. Sponsored by the Inde­pendent Foundation, a private organiza­tion of former Peace Corps members, the committee will oversee the compilation of a "skills bank," a computer-printed list of volunteers, their skills, lan­guage p~oficiency, and preferred areas of help. JUDITH M. STILLION (Psychology) was recently cited in the Women's Educa­tional Equity Communications Network for her research paper entitled "An Examination of Locus of Control and Sex Role Orientation," published in the Journal of Psychology. The network is an abstracting service sponsored by the U.S. Office of Education under the aus­pices of the Women's Educational Equity Act. -4- PERRY KELLY (Art) gave a slide presenta­tion of his fiber works and examples of his photographic work at the Tagami/Hart Gallery in Hawaii in December. He also participated in a three-week study-tour, emphasizing the Danish "Folk High School," of schools in Denmark as guest of the Danish DDGU organization. HAL SALISBURY (director, Continuing Education) has been named chairperson of the Educational Brokering Task Force of the North Carolina Adult Education Asso­ciation. This committee is charged with initiating and encouraging strategies for implementing a community lifelong learning system(s) in North Carolina. JERRY COOK (Technology and Applied Science) authored an article, "Technical Math in the Auto Shop," published in the January 1980 issue of School Shop: Industrial-Technical Education. PATRICK W. MILLER (Industrial Education and Technology) has been selected as a referee for the Journal of Industrial Teacher Edu­cation. He will be reviewing manuscripts for the journal as well as serving in other professional capacities. A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff e or of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina February 15, 1980 ROTC'S FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS IS DRAMATICALLY INCREASED The U.S. Army is becoming an important source of financial aid for students who join the ROTC program at WCU. Figures released recently by the ROTC program here show that the Army intends to spend a total of $108,000 in aid this year for WCU cadets. "That is a significant contribution in student aid to the University," said Chancellor H.F. Robinson. "To generate that amount of assistance privately would require an endowment of more than one million dollars," he said. During the 1979-80 academic year, ROTC will have a cadet stipend payroll of more than $71,000 and will award $16,000 in scholarships. An additional $20,000 will be used to pay cadets attending pre-commission summer camp. Scholar­ship money provided by the Army has al­most tripled since ·last year, while sti-pend funds have increased by 60 percent. Western's ROTC program, established in 1976 and elevated to full detachment status last fall, projected a 1979 fall enrollment of 160 and actually enrolled 168 students. Projected enrollment for next fall is 181. Army ROTC scholarships range from one to four years and include tuition, textbooks, laboratory fees and other educational expenses, and expenses covering travel to and from a cadet's home one time. WCU began to offer the four-year awards when the ROTC unit was elevated to a full detachment, according to Maj. Frank J. Valentine, professor of military science at WCU. Four-year scholarships are available to high school seniors only and must be applied for through the Department of the Army. Scholarships of lesser dura­tion may be applied for directly through the WCU program. Students in the WCU ROTC program receive a $100 per month living allowance, up to $1,000 annually, during their junior and senior years, in addition to scholarship aid. Enrolled cadets may also earn addi­tional scholarships at ROTC summer camps. DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA WILL PERFORM The Duke Ellington Orchestra, directed by Mercer Ellington, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Hoey Auditorium. The Ellington concert, just announced this week, will replace a previously cancelled performance by The Memphis Blues Caravan. Sponsored by the WCU Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions (LCE) Committee, the performance is free to WCU students and members of the LCE subscription series, but advance reservations are required. Admission for others is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Mercer Ellington, son of the late Duke Ellington, took over his father's famous band in May 1974 just after his father's death and is striving to "maintain a tradition, musically as well as profes­sionally and ethically," established by Duke Ellington during his five decades as a bandleader. The son's association with his father's orchestra began when he was eight years old. ROBINSON CHAIRS STATE WILDLIFE COMMITTEE Dan Robinson, associate professor of health and physical education at WCU, has been appointed chairman of a nine­member search and selection committee which will secure an executive director of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Robinson is commissioner of the Wildlife Resources Commission for the ninth dis­trict, which includes the 12 westernmost counties of North Carolina. At the December meeting of the state commission, Bob Gordon, commission chairman, awarded Robinson a certificate of appreciation for outstanding service. CORN HUSK CRAFTS WILL BE TAUGHT A six-week course in the construction and arrangement of corn husk flowers will be offered on Monday nights beginning Feb. 18. Sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education, the course will be taught by Carolyn West in Room 118 Forsyth Build­ing from 7 until 9 p.m. Cost is $18. Participants are asked to bring to class a pair of old scissors, needle­nose wirecutters, one or two old towels, and three-quarter inch masking tape. A materials kit will be available for $3.50. COMPUTER MINI-COURSES SCHEDULED Three short courses on computers will be offered next week. They will include a course on IBM 370/ Amdahl JCL and EDIT for use with the TUCC line, scheduled from 3:30 until 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in Room 220 Forsyth Building. The course will be repeated Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the same time and in the same location. On Wednesday, February 20, a workshop on SAS (Statistical Analysis Package) will be taught by Dr. Nicholas Norgaard from 4 until 5 p.m. in Room 220 Forsyth. For more information, call Robin May, Ext. 7284. -2- MOTOR POOL CHARGES ARE INCREASED Rates for motor pool vehicles have been increased by three cents per mile be­cause of the continuing rise in the cost of gasoline, according to Dr. C. J. Car­ter, vice-chancellor for business affairs. The new rates will be 15 cents per mile for sedans, 17 cents per mile for sta­tion wagons, and 20 cents per mile for vans. Questions about the increases should be directed to the University Motor Pool or to Dr. Carter's office. NAMES IN THE NEWS SUSIE RAY (coordinator, Cooperative Edu­cation), has been appointed to· the exec­utive board of the Southeastern Federal Recruiters Council as chairperson of college membership. She attended a plan­ning session of the board Jan. 18 in Atlanta. PERRY KELLY (Art) served as a juror in Charlotte Feb. 5 for Scholastic Art Awards, an annual national high school competition. He was previously a juror and president for the Greensboro region and a national juror. JENNIE L. HUNTER and PAULINE RICE (Admin­istrative Services), JUDY DOWELL (Home Economics), and PATRICK MILLER (Industri­al Education and Technology) attended the N.C. Council of Vocational Education Jan. 18 at UNC-Greensboro. Miller reported on the development of a vocational teacher educator data bank. Dr. Dowell was elec­ted vice chairman~nd rrr. Rice was re­elected secretary of the organization's board of governors. Dr. Rice also has been appointed to the executive board of the N.C. Business Education Association and will serve as 1980 membership chairman. BOB RIGDON (Human Services) spoke to the Volunteer Agency of Jackson County Feb. 4 on "Grief--Understanding and Helping." LINDA BOWERS (communication disorders specialist, Speech and Hearing Center), recently gave two workshops, for public health nurses of Jackson and Swain coun­ties, on identifying speech, language, and hearing problems with children. Western was cl)osep for its CORE progra.m-­Community Oriented Regional Education-­designed for graduates of two-year insti­tutions who need a baccalaureate degree in business or technology as they move ahead in their careers. Started in 1977, the CORE proeram involves teaching courses in the Morganton-Hickory area each week. It is conducted through the Division of Continuing Education in cooperation with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Catawba Valley Technical Colleee, Western Piedmont Com­munity College and Wilkes Community College.
