Acting Chancellor Frank H. Brown Jr., who took up the responsibilities of the chancellorship Dec. 31 at the request of President Friday, said this week that Mrs. McEniry reported that Dr. McEniry left the intensive care unit Mew Year's Eve. No definite word has been received as to the expected length of Dr. McEniry's stay in the hospital, but Dr. Friday has reported that his condi­tion is improving daily. The home address of Dr. and Mrs. McEniry is Rt. 7, Box 659 H2, Charlotte, N. C. 28213. FILM CLASSIC SERIES ANNOUNCED The Film Conspiracy and the Depart­ment of Speech and Theatre Arts have announced the schedule for their winter quarter film series. Films will be shown each Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Forsyth Auditorium. Subscriptions for the series of seven films can be purchased for $5 from the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts, from any member of The Film Conspiracy, or at the door on the nights of the first two films. Non-subscribers will be admitted to indi­vidual films for $1 except for those films which are starred and have an admission fee of $1.25. EDC IS AWARDED $25,000 The Economic Development Adminis­tration has announced through the office of Congressman Roy A. Taylor the award of a $25,000 grant to West- January 4, 1974 em Carolina University's Economic Development Center. The award was made to help continue the center's program of business and job development in a 28 county region of North Carolina. The federal funds, supplemented by budgeted university allocations, were awarded to help cover the center's administrative costs through June 30, according to the EDA announcement. GLASS EXHIBITION SCHEDULED HERE "North Carolina Glass '74"—an invi­tational exhibition featuring the works of North Carolina glassblowers— will open Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the art gal­lery of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. Events connected with the opening include the presentation of three pur­chase awards by Lee Nordness of Lee Nordness Galleries in New York and a demonstration of glassblowing technique by Blaine Eldridge, WCU instructor of art and one of the participants in the exhibition. The glassblowing demonstration will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the glass stu­dio in Belk Building. Nordness will present the purchase awards during a reception in the art gallery foyer at 7 p.m. The purchase awards include $350 from North Carolina National Bank, $100 from Mr. Gordon Hanes, and $50 from the Ashe-ville Art Museum. The work of nine artists besides Eldridge will be represented at the ex­hibition. They are Mark Peiser, Fritz Dreisbach, Dick Ritter, and Bob Town-send, all of Penland; Billy Bernstein, Gil Johnson, and Locke Wilson, of Burns-ville; Jack King Jr. of Franklin; and John Nygren of Walnut Cove. The exhibition, the first of its kind at WCU, is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee. It will run through Jan. 29. SAXOPHONE-PIANO DUO TO APPEAR Saxophonist Kenneth Deans and pianist James Galloway will present a recital Jan. 10 in Hoey Auditorium. The performance time has been moved up to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate the performers' schedule. The program is sponsored by the Department of Music. Admission is free. Dr. John Dorwin, assistant professor in sociology and anthropology, attended the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Society in New Orleans Nov. 29 - Dec. 1. Dr. James W. The study program, open to all interested persons, is being conducted each Monday night at 6:30 in Room 111 of Hoey Building. Feb. 11, The American Woman: Pioneer, Vic- WCU ENTRY NAMED IN PLAY FESTIVAL The Western Carolina University production of "The Boys in the Band" has been selected as a second alter­nate in the sixth annual American College Theatre Festival. Directed by Dr. Donald Loeffler, head of the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts, the Mart Crowley play drew full houses when it ran here in October. The American College Theatre Festi­val is sponsored by American Airlines and the American Oil Company to promote theatre in a university setting. Each year participating colleges enter a play to be judged. The winners go to regional competitions and on to the finals at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. HIGH SCHOOL ART WORKSHOP OFFERED An eight-week Junior Art Workshop for high school students will begin here Jan. 26. The workshop will meet for two hours each Saturday morning in.Room 294 of the Carol Grotnes Belk Building. The instructor will be Ray Menze, instructor of art. Designed for students in grades 8-12, the workshop will provide experience in drawing and sketching in various media, painting with watercolor and collage, and printmaking. Enrollment will be limited to 20 students on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested persons should make reservations before Jan. 23 by tele­phoning 293-7210 or writing the art department at Western Carolina Univer­sity in Cullowhee. This is the second year WCU has conducted such a program. SOCIAL SECURITY TO COST MORE The new Social Security bill signed into law by the President last week will have an effect on the paychecks of many University employees later in the year. The new law raises to $13,200 the earnings subject to Social Security tax withholding. Formerly only the first $10,800 of an employee's earnings were subject to the Social Security tax. Employees and their employers each will continue to pay a 5.85 per cent Social Security tax. COMMITTEE MEETINGS The Exit Criteria Committee will met Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. in Killian 218 to develop a means of weighting the exit criteria. MATH CONTEST DATE IS ANNOUNCED The fourth annual High School Mathe­matics Contest will be held here April 25, according to an announcement by Dr. J. Pelham Thomas, head of the Department of Mathematics. The contest will be open to students from the 66 public, private, and paro­chial junior and senior high schools of the state's 16 westernmost counties. Last year more than 400 students took part in the competition. PIANO RECITAL SCHEDULED HERE Pianist Marvin Blickenstaff will perform January 17 at 8:15 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. He will play works Mozart, Brahms, Ravel, and Ginastera. Blickenstaff is chairman of instruct tion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds degrees in music from the Obeirlin Conservatory of Music and Indiana University, and has studied also in New York and Frankfurt, Germany. ,«^efor? makin9 his New York debut in 1969, Blickenstaff won the Josephine Fry award of the Piano Teachers Con­gress and was a national finalist in the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Auditions. He has also been a winner of the Studio Club Audi­tions sponsored by the Amarillo Sym­phony, and was awarded the "Diplom du Concours" at the 2nd Vianna da Motta International Piano Competition in Lisbon, Portugal. Blickenstaff has appeared on stage, radio, and television from coast to coast as well as in Austria and Germany. His performance is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee. Admission is free to WCU students and LCE subscription series members, $1 for other adults, and 50 cents for children. MEDICAL RECORD DIRECTOR NAMED Clatie McLean Collins has been ap­pointed director of the medical record administration program in the School of Health Sciences and Services. The appointment, which culminates a year-and-a-half search, was announced by Dr. J. F. Bergner Jr., dean of the School. Mrs. Collins, a registered medical r.ecord ad ministrator, holds degrees from Lees-McRae College and East Tennessee State University. She was formerly director of the School of Medical Record Administration at Baptist Hospital and Bowman Gray School of Med­icine in Winston-Salem. Most recently she served as chief of the medical information section at the Veterans Administration Center in Moun­tain Home, Tenn. Mrs. Collins is a past president of the North Carolina Medical Record Asso­ciation. WITH THE FACULTY Drs. Chovan, associate professor of psychology, was recently awarded a license as a practicing psy­chologist by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Practicing Psy­chologists. Western Carolina University FACULTY-STAFF NEWSLETTER January 17, 1974 APPALACHIAN CONSORTIUM SUPPORTS WCU INVOLVEMENT IN WEBSTER PROJECT The Appalachian Consortium has awarded a grant to the $14>200 Webster Project, a plan initiated by the Univer­sity to help with the preservation and restoration of the historic village of Webster. The $2,466 Consortium grant will be used for a series of three projects--a photographic essay, a newsletter, and an archives collection—designed to promote public interest in the project, according to Dr. Marilyn Jody, associate professor of English and project direc­tor. Webster, once the county seat of Jackson County, was established in 1853. The home of the late Robert Lee Madison, founder of Western Carolina, is located there. Sixty years later, the county seat was moved to Sylva. The photographic essay will consist of a slide narrative to be directed by Mack Sarvis, audio-visual teacher at Camp Laboratory School in Cullowhee. The newsletter, to be edited by • Alice Harrill, editor of "The Western Carolinian," is intended to inform interested persons of the project's activities. First issue is scheduled for publication around the end of January. Dr. Richard Iobst, university archi­vist, and his assistant, Henrietta Cason, will collect and preserve books, documents, and letters relevant to Webster's history. The Webster Historical Society Inc., established last year to preserve the town's natural setting and cultural ELDRIDGE RECEIVES ART AWARD Blaine Eldridge, WCU instructor in art, is one of six North Carolina artists who received purchase awards at "North Carolina Glass '74," an exhibition in the art gallery of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. Eldridge's blown glass work "Babel" was purchased by North Carolina National Bank. The winning pieces were chosen by Lee Nordness of Lee Nprdness Galleries in New York from among 83 works by ten North Carolina artists in the exhibi­tion. The show is on display Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday© from 2-4 p.m. through Jan. 29. traditions, is the fund raising and promotional organization of the Webster Project. Townspeople involved in the preser­vation and restoration effort have begun gathering old photographs, docu­ments, and letters and are compiling a recipe book which will be sold as a fund-raising project of the historical society. Research has culminated in the development of a map of historic Webster and plans are underway to open a general store which would feature homegrown and homemade foods. Last week the Jackson County Board of Education agreed to give an option to the Historical Society for the privi­lege of using the Webster School prop­erty and building, which has been vacated as a result of consolidation. Plans call for a country inn restaurant to be opened on the site. Other members of the university community participating in the project include Dr. Paul Flynn, consultant in educational media; Doug Reed and John Slater, consultants in journalism; and Dr. Alice Mathews, consultant in his­tory and restoration. IT1S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN Some thirty Western Carolina Uni­versity students will enter the icy waters of the Tuckaseigee River Jan. 19 to compete in the fourth annual Winter Quarter Tubing Race. The race will begin at 1 p.m. at Dick's Gap Bridge on N. C. 107, and will end about half an hour later at a steel span bridge nearly two miles downstream. As in the past, entrants will be competing for prize money put up by the University Center Board, which sponsors the race each year. This •year, there'll be an additional incen­tive. The first three persons to finish the race will also win the dubious distinction of being able to try the same thing again the following Saturday, representing WCU in an inter­collegiate tubing race on the same course. Colleges and universities from throughout the Southeast have been invited to participate in the main event Jan. 26. HEALTH SCIENCES RECEIVES GRANT The School of Health Sciences and Services has been - awarded a North Carolina Regional Medical Programs grant for the implementation of work­shops designed to familiarize the health care community with the Physician's Assistant service program. The $10,918 grant will be used for program planning and the presentation of training institutes in 11 Western North Carolina counties, according to Dr. John F. Bergner Jr., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Services and project director. The program would involve selected physicians and other health care personnel in the development of a collaborative Physi­cian* s Assistant program at WCU, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and Duke University. The institutes and seminars will be presented through July and will feature speakers and consultants aware of the problems, methodologies and successes experienced by the Physician's Assistant program in N. C. and other areas. University-trained physician's assistants help physicians by providing diagnostic and therapeutic medical care under the physician's supervision.'
