Robinson and Mrs. Robinson. The university's board of trustees, adminis­tration, faculty, staff, and students will honor Chancellor and Mrs. Robinson with a retirement dinner in Cullowhee Friday, April 27. The trustees, Asheville and Buncombe County alumni, and other Asheville area friends will sponsor a second retirement dinner in Asheville Sunday, June 10. The two region-wide recognition dinners have been planned to embrace the Robinsons' many friends and colleagues. Both dinners are open to the public. Advance reservations will be required for both the Cullowhee and Asheville events. The Cullowhee dinner will be held in WCU's Brown Cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and must be reserved by Friday, April 13. UNC President William Friday and N.C. House of Representatives Speaker Liston B. Ramsey will deliver tributes at the observance. Wallace N. Hyde, chairman of the WCU board of trustees, will serve as master of ceremonies. While individual times on the program will not be available, efforts are being made to accommodate persons or groups interested in making special presentations or comments. Requests should be made as soon as possible to Mrs. Jennie Hunter, chairman of the program committee (ext. 7404). Dr. and Mrs. Robinson plan to continue to make their home in Cullowhee. COMEDY OF MANNERS OPENS NEXT FRIDAY WCU's department of speech and theatre arts will present Moliere's 17th century comedy of manners Tartuffe Friday, April 13, through Wednesday, April 18, in the Little Theatre of Stillwell Building. Cast members are Mark Hopey as Tartuffe, Peter Phillips as Orgon, Betsy Bisson as Mariane, James True as Valere, Anita Knight as Elmire, Howard Allman as Damis, Phoebe Hall as Dorine, Roch Smith as Cleante, Mary Coppage as Madame Pernelle, Charles Bridges as Monsieur Loyal, and Mitchell Medford as the police officer. Chris Zink, a graduate student, designed the sets. Instructor James Wood is director and costume designer. Performances will be at 7 :30 p.m., except for a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 15. Tickets will be $4 for adults, $3 for se­nior citizens, and $2 for children. Reser­vations may be made by calling the box office, ext. 7365. Tartuffe is considered one of the great comedies of world theatre and perhaps Moliere's best work. Its plot centers on the imposter Tartuffe, who gets the respect and devotion of a wealthy man, Orgon, while household members try to c onvince him of Tartuffe's duplicity. PARCEL GRIMES TO SPEAK HERE APRIL 14 WCU will sponsor a statewide leadership conference for minority students Saturday, April 14, in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. Co-sponsored by the Governor's Office of Minority Affairs, the conference for high school seniors and college students will focus on career development. In the morning, after opening remarks by Alexander Killens, an administrative assis­tant in the governor's office, a student panel moderated by WCU's social work depart­ment head Wilburn Hayden will discuss fac­tors that help black college students achieve. Gwen Hill, director of admissions at Winston-Salem State University, then will talk on "Planning a Career." Parcel Grimes, anchorwoman on WLOS-TV, will speak during lunch in Brown Cafeteria. In the afternoon session, professionals in various fields will discuss opportunities in the armed forces, private business, en­vironmental health, financial aid, and co­operative education. WORLP HUNGER WEEK BEGINS APRIL 8 World Hunger Week, which will include a concert, seminars, and a fast to provide food for the area's needy, will be observed at Western Sunday, April 8, through Thursday, April 12. This sixth WCU observance is sponsored by campus ministries, the Residence Hall Coordinating Council, and Western. "The purpose is twofold: to raise individu­als' awareness that hunger exists and to help people be a part of the solution and not part of the perpetuation of the pro­blem," said the Rev. Joe Pavid Fore of the WCU Baptist Student Center and a member of the World Hunger Week committee. A free public concert by singer, songwri­ter, and musician Gene Cotton on Sunday, April 8, at 8 p.m. in the Music-English Recital Hall will begin the week's events. Cotton, who has worked with world hunger and antinuclear organizations for more than a decade, has had several hit singles and albums, including "Like a Sunday in Salem" from the album "Save the Pancer." He has appeared on Pick Clark's American Bandstand and several television talk shows, and he has been giving solo concerts in the United States and Europe. At his performance Sunday, members of the World Hunger Week committee will accept do­nations of non-perishable food for the Jackson County Food Pantry, which distrib­utes food to area families in need through the First Baptist Church of Sylva. Beginning Sunday, volunteer students will gather names of WCU students willing to give up the Thursday dinner meal in campus cafeterias. Through an agreement with the university, the cost of the meal for each student who fasts will be given, in commodi ties, to the World Hunger Week committee. The committee will distribute the food lo­cally to needy families. On Monday and Tuesday, April 9 and 10, activists Bud Stanley and Will Brickley, both of West Virginia's coal mining region, will give presentations in WCU residence halls. Stanley is a singer, storyteller, and advocate for the poor. A booth with information on world and domestic hunger will be set up on the university center lawn Wednesday. Stanley and Brickley will lead seminars on world hunger and defense spending at 2 and 3 p.m. Thursday in the Catamount Room. At 3 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Asheville rep­resentatives of Bread for the World, an in­ternational organization that lobbies on food issues, will conduct a seminar on writ ing letters to legislators. Representatives will lead another seminar in the Balsam Room at the same time on how various politi cal candidates stand on hunger issues. A worship service and light meal at the Baptist Student Center beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday will end the fast and World Hunger Week observance. The program is open to everyone. Wanda Kidd, chairman of the World Hunger Week committee, at the Baptist Student Center, 293-9030. -3- NEW SHOW OPENS IN CHELSEA Opening Tuesday, April 10, in the Chelsea Gallery of the university center will be an exhibition of works in mixed media on paper by Tony Bradley. The show, "Misdirections,11 will open with a reception for the artist at 7 p.m. The pieces in the show, says the artist, represent the culmination of two years1 work with certain ideas and imagery. "The work is concerned with information systems," Bradley says. "Primarily maps of the road, but also the Braille system, message boxes, flags, informational poles, and tickets. The form of these drawings allows for much freedom in exploring imagery." As the show's title indicates, the artist says, "as informational guides they might not necessarily help anyone to get to their destination (except me)." Bradley is a lecturer in art at UNC-A. He has taught classes in basic intaglio, begin­ning printmaking (emphasizing experimental relief printing techniques), fabric print­ing, plate lithography, and inanimate draw­ing. He maintains a printmaking studio. During extensive travel and study in Italy and other European art centers—including Rome, Florence, Siena, Perugia, Pompeii, Naples, Pisa, Paris, and Amsterdam—Bradley visited a number of printmaking studios and a papermaking factory in Pescia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 from UNC-A and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Goergia in 1976. His work is represented in the permanent collections of Memorial Mission Hospital, R.J. Reynolds, Inc., Asheville Art Museum, Abbott Construction Co., and Price-McNabb Advertising Agency. OLYMPICS OF MIND, SPECIAL OLYMPICS HERE Two "olympic" competitions are scheduled here this week. The N.C. Olympics of the Mind takes place on campus April 6, bring­ing about 700 competitors on 122 teams, and the 1984 Special Olympics and Field Day, to be held April 13, will involve about 350 special education students from regional public schools and sheltered workshops. Building body-powered "chariots of rescue" that can make right-angle turns and pick up objects in a given spot has been the challenge for some of the state's brightest young minds since last fall. They also have been devising self-propelled "mouseraobiles" for relays and non-verbal rescue strategies in a medieval scenario, as well as writing their own interpreta­tions of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, complete with slide presentations. This is the second year for the Olympics of the Mind and for WCU's hosting of the event. The number of participants has nearly tripled. The Special Olympics provides athletic competition and sports training for students with mental and possibly physical handicaps and other exceptional qualities. Every participant receives a ribbon and events include races, softball and frisbee throws, jumps, and a wheelchair race. ANNOUNCEMENTS A HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL is being held here Friday, April 6. Ten schools are invited. The event culminates with an evening concert, in which WCU's Concert Choir will participate, at 7 in the Music-English Recital Hall. It is free and open to the public. BLACK AWARENESS WEEK BEGINS MONDAY with an observance of the Martin Luther King anni­versary and a performance of the play, Wine in the Wilderness, produced by the department of speech and theatre arts. The play will begin Monday, April 9, at 8:30 p.m. in Forsyth Auditorium with an admis­sion of $1. It tells the story of a woman's fear of falling in love with an ar­tist, his desire to hold her there only long enough to paint her for his triptych, and her disillusionment when she finds out from Oldtimer, a neighborhood character played by David Roberts II, that he wants a woman who is ugly and ignorant for his model. Becky Beisswenger will play Cynthia; James Caldwell, Sonny-Man; Frank Green, Bill Jameson; and Mollissee Peterson, Tommy. A VISITING SCHOLAR WILL PRESENT "TOWARD A MORE HUMANE TOMORROW" at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in the Natural Sciences auditorium. Dr. John Valusek, formerly a university profes­sor, is a clinical psychologist with the Family Psychology Center in Wichita, Kan. -4- He has appeared on the Phil Donahue and Today shows and published several booklets on human relations. Besides his evening lecture, which is free and open to the public, he will address various classes on such subjects as family violence, prevent­ing emotional crisis, and human behavior. He is campaigning for a new national ethic based on the ideas "People Are Not for Hit­ting" and "Children Are People Too." His visit is sponsored by the department of home economics, the School of Education and Psychology, and the Visiting Scholars Program. NCAEOP WILL MEET WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, IN Brown Cafeteria's East Wing—.not April 17 as previously scheduled. A PBS DOCUMENTARY, "THE PRIMAL MIND," WILL be hosted by Jamake Highwater, who was at WCU in 1979 in conjunction with Mountain Heritage Day. The show will be broadcast on Wednesday, April 18, at 9 p.m. One of the script consultants for the production was Roy Douthitt, formerly with Western's Cherokee Center, which will be mentioned in the credits. According to Douthitt, WCU was privileged, through the efforts of Perry Kelly, to have Highwater here. "His strong background in philosophy and his­tory, when combined with a unique under­standing of tribal peoples, makes it p ossi­ble for him to really contribute to our knowledge of man," Douthitt said. NAMES IN THE NEWS JOE SCAGNOLI (Music) attended the District VIII Convention of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary at the Univer­sity of Miami in Coral Gables March 23-25. Dr. Scagnoli is serving his first year as governor of District VIII. DON KELLEY (CIML) was an invited resource person at the Proposal Development and Sources of Support Workshop held March 29- 30 at N.C. State. He helped participants formulate research and development ideas into fundable proposals. The workshop was sponsored by UNC and N.C. State's Division of Lifelong Education. JOHN McCRONE (dean, Arts and Sciences) and ELLERD HULBERT (director, International Educational Programs) were also on the program. CHARLES STEVENS (Political Science and Public Affairs) lectured on "China and the United States: Five Years After Normaliza­tion" in four WNC communities as part of the 1984 Great Decisions program. Spon­sored in conjunction with the Foreign Policy Association, the Great Decisions series brings discussion of important foreign policy issues to study groups across the country. THOMAS TYRA (head, Music) served as judge for the Central District Bandmasters Association High School Band Contest in Asheboro, N.C., March 22-24. ALBERT L. FOSTER (director, Physical Plant) has been reappointed to the editorial board of the American Institute of Plant Engineers. WILBURN HAYDEN (Social Work) presented a paper, "Population Characteristics of Blacks Living in the Western North Carolina Area of the Appalachian Region," and was on a panel to discuss "Black Issues in the Southern Mountains" at the Seventh Annual Appalachian Studies Conference in Helen, Ga. The paper will be included in the con­ference proceedings. DAVID CARPENTER (Hunter Library) was at the same conference to present a paper, "The Great Smokies: Diverse Perceptions of the Park as a Resource." The Appalachian Studies Conference was held March 24 at Unicoi State Park near Helen. A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina April 13, 1984 ADVISORS TO HELP PLAN NEW PROGRAM A 12-member Board of Advisors has been ap­pointed by the Project Management Institute of Drexel Hill, Pa., to assist WCU' s School of Business in the development of a pro­posed master of science in project manage­ment degree. Members of the board represent major indus­tries throughout the country. The advisory body was appointed as part of an agreement by PMI to help establish at WCU the first nationally accredited master's program in project management in the United States. Development of the new program will be subject to the approval of the general administration and Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina. Named to the board were the following: David H. Morton, director, CF Southern Region Inc., Houston; Douglas S. Egan, Jr., chief of project control, Amtrak, Philadelphia; Dr. J. Gordon Davis, chairman of the executive committee of DDR Interna­tional, Atlanta; Eric Jenett, vice presi­dent of Brown and Root Inc., Houston. Jenny Strbiak, chief engineer of Adolph Coors Co., Golden, Colo.; Jerre W. Wilson, vice president of operations, Technology for Energy Corp., Knoxville; John R. All of the corporation representatives serve at just below the presidential level in their firms. The board held its first meeting at WCU April 8-10 to review the proposal prepared by the School of Business. Recommendations of the advisory board will assist the uni­versity in requesting authorization to plan the degree program. The proposed master's program in project management would be primarily for those with a technical background and currently working in a project environment. Other qualified students, however, will not be ex­cluded. The expected student body also would include international students work­ing in technical and scientific positions. The intent of the program, according to Dr. Adams, is to educate students for the man­agement of complex projects. The School of Business already has a nu­cleus of faculty members active in project management. In addition to Adams, they include Martin D. Martin, PMI certification committee chairman; Terry Kinnear, editor of PMI's Project Management Journal; William Kane and Francis M. Webster, Jr., both of whom have taught PMI workshops. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL HERE TUESDAY Armchair travelers to faraway places like India, China, the Caribbean, or Europe need step no further than the Grandroom to sam­ple exotic curry dishes, hear Jamaican folk­songs, and see the Himalayas during the day­long International Festival April 17. -2- Western's approximately 65 students from 20 countries, assisted by other WCU students and faculty members, will showcase their homelands from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with displays, educational programs, and enter­tainment in the Grandroom and on the lawn of Hinds University Center. Some students will wear their native dress, prepare customary dishes, and explain traditions of various countries on the continents of Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America. A mixture of aromas—like Jamaican coconut sweets, Sri Lankan love cakes, Liberian rice and chicken dishes, Indian fry bread— will fill the Grandroom beginning at 10 a.m., when the international foods go on sale. Booths of each country will offer complimentary samples, but food will be for sale at a central location in the Grand-room. A Jamaican student will grill "jerk chicken," a spicy specialty of that coun­try, on the university center lawn. Lunchtime entertainment in the Grandroom will include Nepalese, Malaysian, and Jamaican songs and Korean dances and skits by WCU's Modern Foreign Language Club. Host families from the community will sell baked goods throughout the day. Sponsored by the International Student Organization and office for student develop­ment, the fifth International Festival is designed to promote international under­standing and cultural exchange, said Starlett Craig, coordinator. International Festival exhibits will be edu­cational, containing demographic and geo­graphical information. Countries that will be represented are Great Britain, Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, India, Jamaica, Korea, Liberia, Nepal, Nigeria, Singapore, Spain, Swaziland, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the United States. Exhibits and programs are open to the public. During the day, faculty members who have made foreign exchange visits will give free public educational programs in the universi­ty center. Caribbean seashells, China, world travel, Swaziland, India, and Sri Lanka will be featured topics. For more in­formation, call Ms. Craig (ext. 7234). PSYCHOLOGIST TO VISIT LATER IN APRIL Gerald Corey, chairman of the department of human services at California State Universi­ty at Fu llerton, will give two free public lectures during his stay at Western from Tuesday, April 24, to Friday, May 4. His appearance is sponsored by WCU1s Visiting Scholars program and the department of hu­man services1 area of counselor education. Dr. Corey, a licensed psychologist and author of numerous textbooks and articles on counseling and psychotherapy, will speak on "Ethical Issues in Counseling" at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Killian 104. He will speak on "Working with Groups: Process and Practice" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in Carraichael Humanities Lecture Hall on the campus of UNC-A. Dr. Corey also will teach guidance and counseling classes at WCU and UNC-A as a visiting scholar, while WCU associate professor of human services A. Michael Dougherty teaches Corey1s classes at Californi
