Hyde, prominent Asheville insur­ance executive and state political leader, last Sunday announced the gift of $200,000 to Western Carolina University for athletic scholarships. President of Hyde Insurance Associates, Inc., he is a 1949 graduate of WCU and chairman of its board of trustees. Half the sum was an outright gift. The other $100,000 will go to Western if within a year it matches the full $200,000. Hyde said the second $100,000 was given condi­tionally "because I want to challenge others to join in a program of support for the athletic program that will be in k eep­ing with the outstanding achievements of the Western Carolina Athletic Department." The gift was announced Sunday night at an appreciation dinner given by Hyde for the 1983 WCU football team and coaching staff at Bill Stanley's Barbecue Restaurant in Ashevi1le. Dr. Robinson said Hyde's gift "is one of the most generous ever made to Western, and I especially appreciate his concern for arousing others to join the effort to give our athletic program the strong financial support it needs...We will match this gift, and I fully expect us to do so while I am still chancellor—by June 30 of this year." Athletic Director Bob Waters heralded the evening as a "great day in the history of Western's athletic program. It is a tremendous beginning to what we hope will grow into the type of endowment that will enable us to continue to be c ompetitive in the Southern Conference." Hyde linked his gift to the highly success­ful 1983 football season. "Western achieved unprecedented success in football in 1983, ending a spectacular season as the number two team in the nation in Division I-AA of the NCAA," he said. "This was accomplished on an athletic budget that is the smallest in the Southern Conference." He said the gift represents his long-held wish to give back to Western something in exchange for all Western has done for him. "Without the scholarship that I received from the Athletic Department in 1941," he said, "a college education would have been extremely difficult for me to obtain." One of Western's best-known graduates, Hyde received a master's in school administra­tion in 1953 and in his early career was a teacher, coach, and athletic director in North Carolina public schools. He earned a doctorate in education at N.Y.U. in 1959. From 1959 to 1961, he was executive secre­tary of the N.C. Democratic Party, the first to hold the office full time. In 1961 he became vice president and personnel director of First-Citizens Bank and Trust Co. in Raleigh, a post he held until moving to Asheville in 1964 to enter the in­surance business. He was first named to the WCU board of trustees in 1969 and was elected chairman that same year. He was president of the Big Cat Club and a major contributor to fund Whitraire Stadium. In 1972 he was elected to the newly formed UNC Board of Governors and received the WCU Alumni Distinguished Service Award. He is a Patron of Quality and serves on the board of the WCU Development Foundation. WESTERN'S CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM IS NOW A department, upon action of the UNC Board of Governors. The new department currently has 192 undergraduates and four full-time faculty members. -2- MAX WILLIAMS IS FIRST SOSSOMON PROFESSOR Max R. Williams, a prominent North Carolina historian and member of the WCU faculty since 1958, has been named Creighton Sossomon Professor of History at WCU. He will hold this, the first named professor­ship at Western, for three years. A fund to support the award, which carries a salary supplement for an existing faculty position, was established last year in the Development Foundation through a gift from D. Creighton Sossomon, professor emeritus of history. A member of the WCU faculty for 24 years, Dr. Sossomon served in a num­ber of posts including head of the depart­ment of social sciences and acting dean of the college. Dr. Williams is a former head of the depart­ment of history, former assistant academic dean, and former chairman of the division of social sciences in the School of Arts and Sciences. A scholar in American history, Dr. Williams is the recognized authority on William Alexander Graham, one of North Carolina's best-known 19th century political figures. Williams wrote his doctoral dissertation on Graham, a United States and Confederate senator, a two-term governor, and Secretary of the Navy under President Millard Fillmore. Dr. Williams is completing the last four volumes of The Papers of William Alexander Graham, an eight-volume series begun by the late Dr. J.G. de Roulhac. The seventh volume is scheduled for publication this spring, and the eighth is in progress. Dr. Williams is also doing research for a biog­raphy of Graham. Besides his many professional accomplish­ments in the field of history, Dr. Williams received the 1976-77 Chancellor's Distin­guished Teaching Award here. Chancellor H.F. Robinson said Williams "embodies all of the qualities of superior teaching and professional leadership that Creighton Sossomon, himself, exhibited during his active teaching career." Williams said, "My appointment is particu­larly gratifying to me because of ray long friendship and professional association with Professor Emeritus Sossomon." PINTER PLAY OPENS IN THEATRE TUESDAY The WCU department of speech and theatre arts and University Players will present Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party Feb. 7-12 in the Little Theatre of Stillwell Building. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. A 2 p.m. Sunday matinee will close the production. The Birthday Party is set on the southern coast of England and presents the initia­tion of Stanley Webber by the cruel games of the neurotic Goldberg and McCann. As is characteristic of Pinter's work, most re­cently seen in his film adaptation of The French Lieutenant's Woman from the novel by John Fowles, The Birthday Party is sparsely written and leaves much room for subjective interpretation. Cast members include Betsy Bisson as Meg Boles, Steve Eller as Petey Boles, David Mulkey as Stanley Webber, Janet Allison as Lulu, Mark Hopey as Goldberg, and Chris Eicher as McCann. Errol Stewart is directing the production. Kevin Hoffman is the set designer, and lighting is by Richard Beam. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children. They may be purchased in advance at the box office, located on the ground floor of Hoey Auditorium, between 1 and 4 p.m. weekdays. For reservations, telephone ext. 7365. NCAEOP PLANS BAKE SALE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS WCU's NCAEOP chapter has scheduled its annual bake sale. Proceeds will again be used to support a scholarship and help with the Special Olympics. RETIREMENT CREDIT: The 1983 General Assem­bly enacted legislation which allows a mem­ber of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System to buy creditable retire­ment service for full-time temporary state employment at full cost. The member must have become a contributing member with the same state agency or state university imme­diately after the temporary employment end­ed. The member must also have completed ten years or more of membership service. The Retirement System will determine the payment, which must be made in one lump sum. Service credits may also be purchased for periods when an employee was on an employer-approved leave of absence and re­ceiving benefits under the North Carolina Worker's Compensation Act, if the employee was reinstated from the leave of absence with the same state employer. A UNION LIST OF PERIODICALS IN WNC LIBRARIES is being prepared with financial backing from the State Library of North Carolina. The 38 participating libraries will each have, in microfiche, this list of periodicals for all the other libraries. A grant of $25,000 will finance the building of an on-line database from which the union list will be generated. Shirley McLaughlin, director of learning resources at A-B Tech, will direct the project. She supervised publication of the fourth edition in 1975, using the computer at A-B Tech. The fifth edition is expected to include more than 8,000 titles. It represents a 20-year com­mitment to library cooperation in the west­ern part of the state. Participants in­clude many public libraries and special libraries as well as those of colleges and universities. The publication thus will in­clude many specialized research materials, such as collections on church history, geol­ogy j geraology, Native American history and culture, regional studies, genealogy, clima­tology, and health sciences., It is expect­ed to be the first step toward a state-wide union list of periodicals. Irene Moser, reference librarian at UNC-A, prepared the grant proposal and will serve as assistant project director. UNC-A will serve as fis­cal agent for the grant. A THIRD TRIP TO THE YUCATAN PENINSULA is be­ing planned by the department of earth sci­ences and anthropology for students and others interested in studying the culture and archaeology of that area May 14-30. Participants will fly from Atlanta to Merida, the largest city in Yucatan, and spend several days there before visiting nearby areas. Organized as two courses in the ethnology and archaeology of the Maya, the trip will include visits to more than 20 archaeological sites, colonial towns, and villages. The students will visit both the Gulf and Caribbean coasts and will have several days to pursue their own interests. Cost of $850 per person, plus tuition, in­cludes round-trip air fare from Atlanta, hotel accommodations, ground transportation for course-related activities, admissions to sites, health insurance and airport tax. WE WERE WRONG In announcing Mary Morris' death last week, The Reporter should have said: Miss Morris was past chairman of Western's University Faculty and Staff Welfare and Benefits Committee and was WCU's representa­tive to the All-University Faculty Welfare Committee for UNC. In 1982, her article in North Carolina Libraries on "Monograph Acquisition" generated widespread interest and response from academic librarians throughout the country. NAMES IN THE NEWS WILLIAM VAN BUSKIRK (Management and Market­ing) was among a group of North Carolina Japan Center Fellows who recently finished stays in Japan, where they studied the lan­guage and pursued their research and profes­sional interests, working with Japanese col­leagues. The fellows program began in 1980 with the intention of building in North Carolina a base of specialized competence on Japan across a wide range of disci­plines. The first two groups of fellows came primarily from N.C. State, where the center is based. This year the fellows came from many public and private universi­ties of North Carolina, and one was a private attorney in Raleigh. This year the program was financed by a grant from the Japan-United States Friendship Commission. GERALD SCHWARTZ (History) read a paper, "Edgewater's Great Founders," to the South­east Volusia County Historical Society at the New Smyrna (Fla.) Yacht Club Dec. 20. MICHAEL A. BLAZEY (Parks and Recreation Management) and EDWARD J. KESGEN (Health, Physical Education, and Recreation) were panelists for a discussion titled "The Future: What It Looks Like" at the 6th Annual N.C. Park Ranger Workshop held recently in Asheville. The three-day conference brought together rangers and law enforcement officers from throughout the state. SCOTT HIGGINS (director, Health Services Management and Supervision) presented a workshop, "From Job Description to Producti­vity," for the Region I N.C. Medical Record Administrators on Jan. 12 at St. Joseph's Hospital. CHERIE LEE (Home Economics) recently became a Professional Member of the American In­stitute of Business Designers. She quali­fied by passing a two-day exam given by the National Council for Interior Design; it i n­cluded a 10-hour sketch problem. JOE SCAGNOLI (Music) attended the 1983 Mid- West Band and Orchestra Clinic held annual­ly in Chicago. In conjunction with the clinic, Dr. Scagnoli also attended meetings of the C ollege Band Directors Association. He serves the Southern Division of the association as its secretary-treasurer. OTTO SPILKER (Health, Physical Education, and Recreation) represented WCU and a TVA-sponsored River Rescue Program (to be orga­nized by WCU and monitored by the Center for Environmental Energy Education here) at TVA's first Water Recreation Safety Strategy meeting Jan. 17-19 in Morristown, Tenn. He led a di scussion on approaching the prob lem through education. WILLIAM H. COOK (formerly with the Cherokee Center) is teaching again this year under a Fulbright scholar grant. He is lecturing in transformational grammar at the Univer­sity of Warsaw, in Poland, through June. EDWARD KESGEN (Therapeutic Recreation) re­cently addressed the Sylva AARP on "High Level Wellness—Making the Most of Your Retirement." He also conducted an evening workshop on "The Mind/Pain Connection" for Jackson County Hospice. FINN-AAGE ESBENSEN (Criminal Justice and Sociology) has been appointed to the edi­torial advisory board of the Criminal Justice Review, effective in December. The executive editor is James L. Maddex, Jr., of Georgia State University, who made the appointment. A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina February 10, 1984 CHANCELLOR SPEAKS IN SANTO DOMINGO Chancellor H.F. Robinson briefed overseas school board members representing institu­tions in several Central and South American countries last Thursday on U.S. education. He was the keynote speaker of the three-day 11th annual seminar for these board members offered by the Inter-Regional Center for Curriculum and Materials Development, which has offices in Barranquilla, Colombia, and in Kingston, Jamaica. Western has been ac­tively involved with educational in-service programs throughout the area served by the Inter-Regional Center and has active teacher education programs in Jamaica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia, and Barbados. In bringing the board members up to date on the concerns and future directions of American education, Dr. Robinson said he fully expects "education to return as a top priority for the p arents" and that "we will see superior students entering the teaching profession, largely because of the opportu­nities that are available for service to mankind and the willingness of the public to pay the teachers the salaries that they can justifiably demand." "We will see a merit pay and a career lad­der approach being developed for teachers by 1990 and certainly before the year 2000," Dr. Robinson said. "The day of edu­cation is at hand." He attended the international meeting through Feb. 4. On Feb. 7, he traveled to Jamaica to participate in a special program in Kingston to celebrate The Priory School's 40th anniversary. He was scheduled to meet with various Jamaican officials, with Jamaican graduates of WCU, and with the U.S. ambassador to Jamaica. BELK GALLERY OPENS MURRAY SHOW An exhibition of watercolors, sculpture, and wall pieces by Brevard artist Tim Murray will be on d isplay in the Belk Art Gallery Feb. 13 through March 6. A recep­tion for the artist will be held Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., and Murray will present an illustrated lecture that evening. Murray is pro fessor of art and director of the Coltrane Art Center at Brevard College. He has exhibited throughout the Southeast, showing work in recent exhibitions in the Research Triangle, Asheville, Spartanburg, Augusta, and Hartsville, S.C. He has been a visiting artist at Clemson and Indiana State universities. His work has been in 65 shows since 1963. The works to be shown at WCU include 10 watercolors, 10 pieces of "whimsically abstract, laminated wood sculpture," and five small wall pieces. GEOLOGY MUSEUM GETS NEW SPECIMENS Western's geology museum, which opened two years ago, has been given another boost—a private collection of more than 1,000 individual specimens donated by Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Campbell of Brevard. Their collection, given to the university through the Development Foundation, includes some 250 specimens that have been described. Included are specimens from famous mineral localities in Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, in addition to many well known districts in the U nited States. Some of the new material is of gem quality, such as precious opal from Australia and emerald from Colombia. Specimens from some of the classic mining districts, including -2- copper ores from Michigan, Montana, and Arizona, will be on display in the museum immediately and will be used for instruc­tion in the department of earth sciences. Among the more spectacular specimens are fine agates, amethysts, and tourmalines from Brazil, araazonite from Virginia, pyrite from Chile, and fluorspar from Illinois. HELP WITH FEDERAL INCOME TAX FORMS may be found at Hunter Library. Several commer­cially published tax guides such as J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax and the 1984 Tax Guide for College Teachers as well as IRS tax guides are available at the reference desk. Of special interest is the 1984 Reproducible Federal Tax Forms, which may be photocopied and used as official tax forms. IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED 10 YEARS OF STATE SERVICE within the last six years, you may be able to increase your retirement fund at low cost. Under certain conditions—if you are a former employee of another state, a former North Carolina retirement member, or a military veteran—you may p urchase credit for time you were not in the state system. From the time you have completed 10 years of state service, you have up to six years to exercise your option to purchase. (This year, eligible state employees reached the 10-year mark in 1981 or 1978.) It is least expensive to buy within the first three years, when you will pay only the employee share of the state retirement contribution for your years not in the system—unless you are buying credit based on prior out-of-state employment, in which case you pay both employee and employer shares.
