It is they who could teach . . . new kinds of lower-division courses. With the support of administrators, they could form new teaching organizations that would provide an alternative to traditional departments. Cullowhee, North Carolina On their honors Western administrators earn high praise from professional groups Two Western Carolina University vice chancellors were honored in Novem­ber with prestigious awards from professional organizations. Dr. Glenn Stillion, vice chancellor for student development, received the Melvene Draheim Hardee Award from the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) at the association's annual conference November 9-12 in Greenville, Stillion South Carolina. The award, which is based on merit and may or may not be awarded each year, recognizes contributions to student personnel work by a SACSA member. Dr. James E. Dooley, vice chancellor for univer­sity services, was named an honorary life member by the North Carolina Music Educators Associa­tion (NCMEA) at the organization's annual in-service conference in Winston-Salem on Novem­ber 15. Stillion became WCU's vice chancellor for student development in 1973, after five years in student affairs at the University of Alabama. Stillion's nomination for the SACSA award notes his implementation of model and innovative programs in minority affairs, alcohol awareness, intramural activities, student disabilities, staff development, and outdoor education; and his contri­butions to student person­nel work through publica­tions, presentations, and consultations. Dooley has been vice chancellor for university services since 1976. Prior to his move to WCU, he was director of choral activities and coordinator of music education at the University of Georgia. He is a past president of the Southern Division of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and a past mem­ber of the MENC National Executive Board and editorial board of Music Educators Journal; mem­ber of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Psi; and a National Arts Associate of Sigma Alpha Iota. Dooley is principal writer and editor of several MENC publications, including Beyond the Classroom: Informing Others, and is a published choral arranger and editor. He is an active clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. He founded and directs the Western Carolina Community Chorus, now in its twenty-fourth year and the oldest continuing community chorus in Western North Carolina. Here's a piece of help: the Institute for College and University Teaching, in cooperation with the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, will sponsor a seminar titled "It's a Matter of Style" on Friday, January 14. Dr. Tony Grasha, professor of psychology at the Uni­versity of Cincinnati and national authority on teaching and learning styles, will lead the seminar, designed for faculty members from higher education institutions across Western North Carolina. Registration is required, and participants will be limited to thirty. To register, or for more information, call the Institute for College and University Teaching at 227-7278. Part of the fuel for research is funding, and during 1993-94 the Center for Improving Moun­tain Living (CIML) will pump $2,500 into each of two WCU faculty research programs on development issues relevant to the Western North Carolina region. The grants were made available through CIML's Re­gional Development Fellows Program. Dr. Jo Ann Hickey (Social Work and Sociology) was awarded funds for a proposal titled "Policies, Problems, and Opportunities for Rural Economic Development in North Carolina: A Contrast of Western North Carolina and Other Regions of Our State." Dr. Royce Woosley and Dr. David Butcher (Chemistry and Physics) will share funds for a proposal titled "An Investigation of the Causes and Decline of Wild and Commercially Grown Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri) in Western North Carolina." CIML created the Regional Development Fellows program to facilitate direct involvement of the Western Carolina community in the center's services. Applicants submitted detailed proposals on intended research activities and their relevance to Western North Carolina development. All projects are to be completed by June 15, 1994, and will be followed by reports and seminars from grant recipients. For more information, call 227-7492. Brown (Sport Management) and Greg Duff (University Athletics) are coauthors, with Dr. Bill Sutton of the University of Massachu­setts at Amherst, of an article titled "The Event Pyramid: An Effective Management Strategy." The article appeared in the December issue of Sport Marketing Quarterly. Also, Brown is a coauthor of an article titled "The NIRSA Curriculum Guide: A Resourceful Manual for All in Recreational Sport Management" in the fall issue of the NIRSA Journal. • Kathryn Stripling Byer (English) was the Virginia Butts Sturm writer-in-residence November 8-12 at West Virginia University. Byer presented a public reading and conducted a poetry workshop for selected students. • Thomas E. McClure (Center for Improving Mountain living) became president of the National Association of Manage­ment and Technical Assistance Centers (NAMTAC) at the association's annual meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. McClure will serve a one-year term for NAMTAC, composed largely of university-affiliated centers that help transfer academic-based information and knowl­edge to communities and businesses to further economic development and industrial competitiveness. • Matthew Nicholl (Music) is the author of Introduction to MIDI/ Synthesis, a new book from C.P.P. Bel win for educa­tional and trade markets. Also, Nicholl published an article titled "Music Technology: Empower­ment or Entrapment?" in the fall issue of the Society for Electro- Acoustic Music Journal. • Dr. Maurice Phipps (Parks and Recreation Management) was notified that his research on leadership training has been accepted for a symposium on outdoor education to be held in Bradford Woods, Indiana, in February. The research, conducted with the aerospace human factors division of the NASA-Ames Research Center of Mofat Field, California, was to evalu­ate a systematic ap­proach to learning leadership in expedition settings. NASA studies similarities between expeditions and aero­space missions. • Timothy Richards (Center for Improving Mountain Living) re­ceived the "Executive Director's Award of Excellence" from the North Carolina Small Business and Technology Development Center. Richards was recognized for contributions to the statewide program. • Lisa Sons, Jeff Hughes, and George Swindoll (Housing), with Dr. Bill Haggard (Student Development), Dr. Chris Gunn (Coun­seling and Psychological Services), and Chris Trefethen (Health Services), as well as a number of students, presented a mock rape trial at the annual meeting of the Southern Association of College Student Affairs (SACSA) in Greenville, South Carolina.
