LaGuardia Community College, The City University of New York, in College Teaching Cullowhee, North Carolina Media messages Hunter Library convenes council for idea exchange between WNC librarians P rofessional development needs of librarians and media coordinators for kindergarten through twelfth grade in Western North Carolina were the topic of a special council convened at WCU last week by staff members in Hunter Library. The council, which met November 30 in the Ramsey Center, brought some thirty-five media and library personnel from Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties, as well as Cherokee Central Schools, together for discussion with faculty and staff members from Hunter Library and the College of Education and Psychology. Hunter Library staff members, led by Sharon Kimble, human resources assistant, and Jill Ellern, assistant professor, planned the event to help the library and WCU get better informed about K-12 library issues. Information gathered at the meeting could be used to develop workshops, seminars, and other services for librarians and media specialists, Kimble said. Chancellor John Bardo, who made welcoming remarks at the meeting, has placed among the university's top goals the reflection of a systemwide University of North Carolina effort to address needs of K-12 education in North Carolina. The meeting also let school librarians and media specialists meet and share information with colleagues, from whom they are usually isolated. In preparation for the meeting, Hunter Library staff members visited school libraries in the six counties to introduce themselves and learn about previous professional development activities for librarians there. Organizers of the council will compile a final report on information from the meeting and will share the document with admin­istrators in participating counties. The report is expected in January. Kimble and Ellern emphasized that the meeting was for informa­tion only. The university does not plan to create a new academic program for media coordinators. This year the bazaar will be held in the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the Ramsey Center because of renovation work being done in the University Center. Changes coming in campus dialing plan Starting Tuesday, January 2, 1996, two changes will take place in the way you make telephone calls on campus. For local calls, first dial 9 and then dial the seven-digit number. Local calls are those from campus to Sylva (586 and 631), Cullowhee (293), or Cashiers (743). For long-distance calls on the state network (RADSI), dial 9 - 1 - (area code) and the seven-digit number. The works are titled "Tobacco," "Snow Breath," and "Wild." • Joan Byrd (Art) is the author of "John Kuhn: Radiant Vision," an article in the October/November issue of American Craft. • Mike Creason (Intramural Sports) became president of the North Carolina Association of Intramurals and Recreation in November in Greensboro at the convention of the North Carolina Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Until 1997, Creason will be an executive member of the board of NCAHPERD, which provides training workshops and seminars throughout the state. • Bob Godfrey (Art) was elected vice president of External Affairs for the Asheville Art Museum. • Dr. Chris Gunn (Counseling and Psychological Services) recently presented a workshop and consulted with the counseling center staff of Appalachian State University on "Finding Solutions in Our Group Therapy Services." • Matthew Liddle (Art) was among artists featured in "New Regional Printmaking," an exhibition at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in October and November. • Dr. Lois Petrovich- Mwaniki (Art) delivered a paper at the international Symposium on the History of Art Education, held at Pennsylvania State University in October.
