Click on the link in the “Related Materials” field to access recent issues.The , Reporter A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina December 7, 1984 WESTERN FOLKS TAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HONORS When honors were presented at the annual membership banquet of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Nov. 15, the name of Western Carolina University came up often. Western's registrar, Harriet M. Parker, was recognized as Citizen of the Year. Bill Bradley and his wife, Betsy, were named Farm Family of the Year; Bradley is with the WCU Traffic and Security office. And a graduate of Western, Kyra Jamison, was named E ducator of the Year for the public schools. Doug Reed, director of the Office of Public Information at W CU, was installed as president-elect. Mrs. Parker has served as registrar here since 1970. She supervises a full-time staff of 11 employees responsible for regis­tration and the maintenance of student records. She currently is working on the development of an integrated on-line system that will computerize academic records, transcripts, and degree listings for the university. Mrs. Parker "enthusiastically supports edu­cational endeavors and athletic activities of our local schools to provide a well-rounded education for our youth," said the citation. "She works with dedication at fund-raising efforts for scholarships and to support athletics for the young people of the community." She is a charter member and past president of the Jackson County Business and Profes­sional Women's Club; 1982-84 president of the local AAUW chapter; a charter member of the Council on Appalachian Women; and a mem­ber of East LaPorte Chapter Number 206 of the Order of the Eastern Star, which she served as worthy matron for two years and as district deputy. Mrs. Parker also is a charter member of the WCU Garden Club and a member of the Cane Creek Extension Homemakers Club, the Camp Laboratory School PTO, and the Cullowhee High School Athletic Boosters Club. The citation pointed out that she " aids, supports, and assists the elderly people and needy children in the commun ity both on an individual basis and through club activities." Several years ago, Mrs. Parker was named "Boss of the Year" at WCU and in District I by the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel. A former Cub Scout den mother and a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church, she served on the Governor's Leadership Conference for Women. She has served on numerous univer­sity planning committees. She and her husband, Grady C. Parker, have been married for 29 years. They are the parents of three sons. As Farm Family of the Ye ar, the Bradleys were cited for their participation in Agricultural Extension Service programs de­signed to bring economic stability to moun­tain farm families. Their innovations have included the production of burley tobacco on raised beds and the incorporation of labor-saving techniques. They have cooperated with the Extension Service on numerous on-farm tests which have benefitted other members of mountain agriculture through an expanded knowledge base and by example. Diversification of their operation to in­clude beef cattle, corn silage, hay crops, -2- broccoli, cauliflower, and burley tobacco has allowed them to expand and upgrade their operation by modernizing facilities and equipment, said the citation. The Bradley family participates in the North Carolina Beef Cattle Improvement Program, the Burley Tobacco Growers Asso­ciation, and the Jackson County Young Farmers Association. The Bradleys have two preschool children. Mrs. Jamison, a 1978 graduate of Western, teaches at Smo key Mountain Elementary School. She took additional training in the FAST (Fundamental Approaches in Science Teaching) program through the University of Hawaii. Jackson County is one of only three systems in North Carolina with FAST teachers. As an eighth grade sponsor, she has organized and led stude nt field trips to Washington, D.C., to the World's Fair at Knoxville, to Raleigh, to Winston-Salem, and to Chapel Hill. She also led a group of students on a 10-day tour of France and Switzerland. Mrs. Jamison is Math Club sponsor at Smokey Mountain School, serves as an evaluator for science and m ath books for the school and county, organized the school's Math Fair, and has served as chairperson for the school's Science Fair and as a member of the school's Science Fair committee. She was instrumental in bringing to Smokey Moun­tain School recently the Starlab Planetari­um Program. She serves on the advisory committee for the Mathematics and Science Education Center at Western. Before joining the faculty at Smokey Mountain, she taught at Cherokee High School and Waynesville Junior High. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators and the state association of math teachers. Mrs. Jamison and her husband, Jeff, live in Whittier with their daughter. MEETING AT GROVE PARK TO EXPLAIN UNC The last in a series of regional meetings to inform citizens about the University of North Carolina will be held i n Asheville Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Grove Park Inn. The meeting will be a report by the UNC Board of Governors and President William Friday on how the university is addressing the state's present and futu re problems. President Friday and Charles Z. Flack, Jr., of Forest City, a member of the Board of Governors and chairman for the Asheville event, said the meeting is intended to pro­vide personal contact with university con­stituents and to enlist their involvement in future planning. The program, with the theme Partners in Progress, will include a multimedia slide show to provide a close-up look at the activities and a ccomplishments of the 16 campuses of the university. The Asheville meeting will be prim arily for persons in the 18 westernmost counties, served by two UNC campuses, UNC-Ashevi1le and Western Carolina University. Meetings for other regions have been held in Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, Greenville, and Elizabeth City. Invitations have been sent to known alumni of all UNC institutions and to other region­al leaders in the 18 counties. WCU Chancel­lor Coulter has invited our faculty and staff to attend, and the meeting is open to all interested persons by advance reserva­tion. Deadline for reservations is Dec. 7. The evening will begin with a light buffet at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m. A charge of $5 per person will cover costs. Aaron Prevost of Waynesville. -3- NAMES IN THE NEWS ED KESGEN (Therapeutic Recreation), MIL CLARK (associate dean, Education and Psychology), and JUDY STILLION (Psychology) attended a meeting of the board for the North Carolina Olympics of the Mind Nov, 16 in Charlotte, N.C. Plans for regional and state tournaments for the Olympics of the Mind were discussed. The Western Regional Olympics of the Mind T ournament will be held at Western next spring, with Dr. Clark serving as director. GEORGE W. REESER (Industrial Education and Technology), JANE HALL (Home Economics), POLLY RICE and JEAN DENNEE (Administrative Sciences) participated in the fall workshop of the North Ca rolina Council of Vocational Teacher Educators in Wilmington Nov. 11-13. Dr. Reeser was elected president for the coming year, and Mrs. Hall will continue to serve as a member of the governing board. PERRY KELLY (Art) was honored at the ann ual conference of the N.C. Art Education Association Nov. 2-4, where he was named "Outstanding Art Educator of North Carolina, 1984." The award will be made by the National Art Education Association in its annual conference in Dallas, Texas, next April. During the North Carolina conference, he also gave a slide-talk on China. He has lectured on the contemporary scene in the Peoples Republic of China in Chapel Hill, Reidsville, Sylva, and Cullowhee. ROBERT HOLQUIST (Music) attended the North Carolina Music Educators In-Service Con­ference Nov. 4-6. He organized a workshop and presented a discussion regarding adjudi­cation of vocal soloists and choral ensem­bles. Dr. Holquist also was elected to serve another two-year term as choral acti­vities coordinator, a position he has held since November 1982. MARIO GAETANO (Music) attended the Percussive Arts Society International Convention from Nov. 1-4 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. TYLER BLETHEN (History) was invited to attend a conference of the National Humanities Faculty in Raleigh Nov. 16. The purpose of the conference was to tell p ar­ticipants about the National Humanities Faculty and to invite them to become affiliated with it. TYREE KISER EXPRESSES APPRECIATION Dear Colleague: I wish to thank you so much for my party on Tuesday, November 27. It was a real surprise. I wish I could thank each of you in person. Since this is not possible, I want to tell you how much I appreciate your presence at the party, your letters, calls, and contributions. Kiser, Jr. MEDIA CENTER ANNOUNCES HOLIDAY HOURS During the Christmas break the Media Center will be open only on a limited schedule. From December 17 until December 21, and again from January 2 until January 14, the center will be open from 8 until 5. It will be closed from December 24 until January 1. On January 15, the center will resume its normal operating hours of 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. each Friday. In addition to these restrictions, produc­tion services will be limited during the Christmas break. ENROLLMENT IS UP THIS FALL Fall enrollment figures at Western show significant increases in the number of graduate and minority students and an increase in total enrollment of about 2 percent. Graduate enrollment increased from 824 stu­dents in 1983 to 948 this fall, an increase of 15 percent. The number of new graduate students was up 33.3 percent over 1983. Enrollment in Western's programs in Asheville was up 8.9 percent. Undergraduate minority enrollment at WCU rose to 450 students, a 4.7 percent in­crease. Minority students account for 7.8 percent of Western's enrollment. Black stu­dents represent 6.2 percent of undergradu­ates, including a 10 percent increase in black undergrads this year. -4- The combined graduate and undergraduate headcount at Wes tern this fall is 6,134 stu­dents, a figure that does not include stu­dents enrolled in extension credit courses and non -credit courses offered through WCU's division of continuing education. The 6,134 figure represents an increase of 108 students, or 1.8 percent overall. "Based on fall figures, we are looking at a slightly increasing enrollment profile at Western," said Joseph D. Creech, director of academic services. "Our freshman class, which was up five percent last year, is up another one percent this year. That comes against state and national decreases in the number of high school seniors," he said. Although the num ber of high school seniors in North Carolina is projected to drop by 13 percent between 1982 and 1 986, Creech said he felt WCU's array of p rograms and em­phasis on quality would keep our enrollment steady. "Our freshman application rate was up 9 per­cent this past year," Creech said. "We are relying on getting the message out that we have quality programs, quality faculty, quality facilities, and a q uality environ­ment ." BRITISH BRASS BAND TO PLAY IN ASHEVILLE On Sunday, December 9, the Smoky Mountain British Brass Band will perform at the Asheville Community Theatre. This "Christ­mas Celebration in Brass" covers the broad­est spectrum of Christmas music from very early works to contemporary styles that are premiering in this area tour. Included are selections for vo cals, narration, and small ensembles as well as the full band. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in the theatre, which is located at 33 Walnut St. East, near the Inn on the Plaza. Several WCU faculty, students, and alumni are involved in the Smoky Mountain British Brass Band. It is di rected by Richard Trevarthen of the WCU music faculty. Joel Schultz, director of the WCU marching band, is a member of the band and pl ays solo E flat cornet. Bert Wiley, another music faculty member, is the band's general manager and compere. Student members are Jennifer Jones, percussion; Ray Haney, trombone; and Mark Sales, B flat tuba. Tickets for the concert, available at the door, are $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. MED TECH PROGRAM IS REACCREDITED Western's medical technology program has been awarded full reaccreditation by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and A ccreditation (CAHEA). The new accreditation is for the maximum period of seven years and was based on a one-year self-study and findings of a visi­tation team of the N ational Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), sponsored by the A merican Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Society for Medical Technology. The medi­cal technology review committee at NAACLS recommended the approval to CAHEA. Institutions approved as clinical affili­ates of the WCU program were St. Joseph's Hospital and Veterans Administration Medi­cal Center in Asheville, C.J. Harris Community Hospital in Sylva, Margaret R. Pardee Hospital in Hendersonvi1le, Humana Hospital in Greensboro, and Haywood County Hospital. Western's med tech program was begun in 1975 and re ceived initial accreditation in 1978. This fall, all 10 of our med tech graduates who took the national board examinations passed, the first time in the ni ne-year history of the program that 100 percent of the graduates had been successful. The national passing rate is 90 percent for one exam, 84 percent for the o ther. "We're extremely proud of o ur reaccredita-tion and the 100 percent certification of our program," said Dan Southern, program director. "It reflects the commitment of our faculty and affiliate hospitals to pro­vide top-quality preparation and training, and it is the fruit of superior efforts by all involved—especially the students." One student, Sandra Jones, scored in the top 10 percent of the 5,040 persons who took the n ational exam. She is a staff medical technologist at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville. Another, Mark Jackson, scored in the top 10 percent on one exam.
