In the following paper we present fansub as an unusual learning tool in the multimedial translation course between Spanish and Italian of the Postgraduate Degree in Specialised Translation held at the University of Bologna. First, we encourage our students to observe and analyse how a virtual community of non-professional translators develop their activity, what are their levels of translation competence, if constraints and limitations imposed by this practice are fulfilled and, above all, what are the consequences of low-quality translations on the usability of subtitles.
