Historically present in Germany for the past two hundred years, Borna disease is a meningoencephalomyelitis which affects mainly horses and sheep. Recent studies have shown evidence of Bornavirus infections in numerous countries, in numerous animal species, and probably also in man. However, the zoonotic nature of the disease is still controversial. BVD RNA has been detected in France both in man and in various animal species (cattle, fox, horse, teal, seagull).
