Initiatives and creativity of foresters in the field of biodiversity

Biodiversity conservation requires a holistic approach to forestry so as to better apprehend the cycle of life and sustainably manage the forest heritage. This task is not just a matter of environmental concern and cannot be approached without taking on board economic criteria. Developments over the last twenty years have led to a paradigm shift in our perception and understanding of forests, of their management and especially in the attention paid to the actions that contribute to maintaining or improving biodiversity. For private forests, the institutional strategy is to emphasize educational support for forest owners using a number of tools such as the index for potential biodiversity, the marteloscope and various outreach measures. For publicly owned forests, the ONF has used various means to reassert the principle of sustainable and multifunctional management, e.g. instructions and internal memoranda, development of staff skills in naturalism, establishment of appropriate networks and data base. In addition to regional forestry guidelines, which are the common foundation for operational aspects of private and public forests, and the specific measures implemented by the relevant bodies, a great many initiatives are taken in the field by managers. The dialogue and exchanges of experiences between private and public foresters in the field should be continued so that solutions are found ensuring that a more fully explored and better managed heritage will be handed down to future generations.La conservation de la biodiversité exige une approche holistique de la forêt pour mieux comprendre le cycle du vivant et pour gérer durablement un patrimoine forestier. Cette tâche ne relève pas seulement de préoccupations environnementales ; elle ne peut en effet s’affranchir de considérations économiques. Le cours de ces vingt dernières années a conduit aujourd’hui à un changement de paradigme dans la perception et la compréhension de la forêt, de sa gestion et, en particulier, de l’attention portée à toutes les actions concourant au maintien, voire à une amélioration de la biodiversité. En forêt privée, la stratégie des institutionnels est de privilégier un accompagnement pédagogique du propriétaire forestier par l’usage de plusieurs outils tels que l’indice de biodiversité potentielle, le martéloscope et diverses actions de vulgarisation. En forêt publique, le principe d’une gestion durable et multifonctionnelle des forêts est réaffirmé par diverses dispositions prises par l’ONF : instructions et notes de services, développement des compétences naturalistes des personnels, création de réseaux et d’une base de données appropriés. En plus des orientations régionales forestières, qui constituent un socle commun des aspects opérationnels en forêt privée ou publique, et des mesures spécifiques prises par chacun des organismes concernés, de nombreuses initiatives sont prises par les gestionnaires de terrain. Dialogues et échanges d’expériences entre forestiers privés et publics méritent d’être poursuivis sur le terrain pour trouver des solutions permettant de léguer aux générations futures un patrimoine mieux connu et mieux géré
