Cells were identified by Pax6 immunoreactivity in a minimum of three 200 µm radial unit sections from each age in each species. Mitoses were identified by 4A4 immunoreactivity and/or condensed chromatin in DAPI stained tissue. Numbers in parentheses indicate the total number of Pax6+ mitotic cells counted in each compartment from each age.</p
