Growing evidence indicates that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is an important common pathological event in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is triggered by the accumulation of misfolded proteins provoked by ER stress conditions, to restore homeostasis. We are particularly interested in the Ire1/Xbp1 branch of the UPR, in which Ire1 mediates the unconventional splicing of Xbp1 mRNA so that Xbp1spliced can activate the transcription of UPR effectors genes.
