The prevalence of stress and burnout syndrome among the nurses of different profile

Problem topicality. People that profession requires care giving to others uses the resources of their positive emotions during the specific time, their organism becomes not resistant, is not able to resist the stress. If such condition prevails, the total burnout of physical energy and psychic is possible and such condition effects the personal motivation, point of view and behavior [20]. A number of notifications on the emotional burnout, unprofessionalism, conflicts in the working environment, apathy to the patients is increasing in Lithuania. Recently, the job load of nurses, the number of patients is increasing, the responsibility gets bigger, and they need to take important decisions regarding the life of patients by themselves more often [19]. Work aim. To determine the prevalence of stress and burnout syndrome among the nurses of different profile. Investigation methods. The investigation has been performed in the Hospital of Kaunas University of Medicine (KMUK) in the Clinics of Neurosurgery (Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery Intensive Therapy, and Mixed Traumas) and in the Clinics of Cardiology (Department of Intensive Care of Cardiology and I department of Cardiology). The investigation sample has been formed from 80 general nurses working in the departments of intensive therapy (n=25), surgery (n=28), and therapy (n=27). In order to perform the investigation, the questionnaires have been used: questionnaire of stress suffered by the nurses (see annex 3), Ch. Maslach questionnaire for evaluation of burnout syndrome (see annex 4), and additionally formed questions helping to set out the sociodemographic, profession data, relaxing ways after the stress situation (see annex 2). The data statistical analysis has been performed using the statistical program “Statistica v. 5 for Windows”. The results are very significant statistically, if p≤0.05. Results. The nurses characterized by the profile of intensive therapy suffer from the stress related with psychological environment mostly i.e., death of patients and care of dying patients 8.72 (SN±3.69), and insufficient preparedness for such work 2.96 (SN±1.79). The nurses characterized by the profile of surgery 2.96 (SN±1.57) have felt lack of support from their colleagues, compared with the nurses of other profile (p<0.05), and stress related with the doctor’s criticism 5.32 (SN±2.40) more often. The nurses characterized by the profile of therapy suffer from the stress related with physical work environment (not suitable work schedule, lack of time in order to perform the nursing tasks). The nurses of therapy profile 45.96 (SN±20.3) have suffered from the symptoms of psychosomatic tiredness statistically more significant than the nurses (p<0.05) of intensive 34.76 (SN±17.7) and surgery 45 (SN±15.5) profile. The nurses of such profile have suffered mostly from the symptoms of psychosomatic nature: disturbed sleep, allergy, psychological burnout, depression, unwillingness to do something new, and not enough time for themselves.
