Manifestation of burnout syndrome and coping strategies in x hospital medical staff professional activities.

The aimof the study: to establish burnout syndrome and coping strategies in X hospital medical staff (doctors and nurses) professional activities. Objectives: 1. Identify manifestation of X hospital medical staff burnout syndrome depending on the position, age, education, marital status, shift duration (hrs.), workload (posts), work experience (years) and work units. 2. Identify the X hospital medical staff burnout coping strategies in professional activity, according to the position, education, marital status, shift duration (hrs.), workload (posts), work experience (years) and work units. Research methods. The object of the research –manifestation of burnout syndrome and coping strategies in X hospital medical staff (doctors and nurses) professional activities.The anonymous questionnaire survey using a standardized questionnaire Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)as well as the research author‘s composed questionnaire on burnout coping strategies selection evaluation was employed.The research included 218 participants. 13 quetionnaires were incorrectly filled in (incomplete) and 16 of them were not returned. 74 questionnaires filled in by doctors (response rate- 63.2%) and 112 by nurses (response rate- 62.2%) were suitable for data analysis. The research results were processed applying the software SPSS 17.0 program and the Excel 2010 program.This study was approved by the Bioethics Center of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences- BEC -15V (M) - 106. Results. Higher levels of psychological stress are experienced by doctors - they are statistically significantlymore often than nurses feel completely exhausted, are constantly in a hurry, lose sense of humor, feel that they do not have enough time for themselves, find it difficult to concentrate and to remember things. Low emotional exhaustion level is significantly more rare for medical workers belonging to the age group >50 years than for medical staff belonging to the age group 21 years), in order to overcome the burnout syndrome, often choose medical and other measures, compared with less experienced counterparts. In order to overcome the burnout syndrome the longest work shift (> 12 hrs. per day) working health care professionals statistically significantly more often choose mutual assistance in comparison with the shortest work shift (6-8 hours)working colleagues. Conclusions.The burnout syndrome is manifested in medical staff by physical symptoms - headaches, altered sleep at night, and shoulder & neck pain. More than half of the medical staff often feel that they do not have enough time for themselves, almost half of them are in a constant rush and it is hard to concentrate and remember things. Doctors significantly more often feel headaches, and nurses often have allergies. More than half of the medical staff involved in the study experience a high level emotional exhaustion, their depersonalization is medium, and their personal achievements loss is high - 76.9 percent. 2. Burnout coping strategy, such as mutual support, is more significant to doctors;using medications and other measures as well as emotional control are more significant to nurses. Research participants with university degree significantly more often choose mutual support, and those who acquired non-university educaton- medications and other measures as well as control of emotional qualities. Age, marital status, workload and work in a specific section did not have a significant influence on the choice of burnout coping strategies. Health workers suffering from burnout syndrome associated with physical health changes usually prefer to control emotions, mutual support is based on the work environment and personal skills development strategies, while the medical staff suffering from burnout syndrome associated with psychological health changes, prefer to control emotions.
