Four fields are identified in which genealogical material plays an important role. The first is the reconstruction of long-term shift in demographic regimes, for which other source material is often not available. The second is the study of geographical (and social) mobility in the past, using the places where vital events have taken place. The third is biodemography-the emerging field where evolutionary biology, genetics and family history intersect.
