Cities Without Traders? Exchanges and Trade Relations in the Cities of the Straits. In the opinion of the Ancients, the Straits were a major area of commercial traffic between the Aegean and the Euxine. However, the epigraphic corpus of coastal cities in the region of the Straits has revealed few cases of individuals called emporos or naucleros. This could lead us to wonder whether the cities of the Straits played a passive role in maritime and land trade in the region.
