Murunga, colline du Burundi : étude géographique

Murunga, a hill of the Burundi Murunga is a «hill», a term which means both surface relief and a social group area. This hill is located on the edge of the Congo-Nile range ; is has an altitude of more than 2 000 m. The climate is cool and wet, but rains are irregular. Natural vegetation is diminushing because of the high density — 140 hab./km2 — and growth rate — 2 to 3 % per year — of the population. The population lives in groups of huts cailled enclosures, which are connected by family ties and good neighbour relations. The economy of the «hill» is based on a combination of farming and animal raising. The crops, more or less fertilized with dung all around the enclosures and pastures, rise in strata on the slopes. At the bottom of the valley, the swamps are drained during the dry season. The «hill» is divided among various families of the same tribe, but the pastures are used on a collective basis. Peasants with their families or sometimes with tenants, obtain three types of crops during the year. But the soil is poor in spite of the dung fertilizer used. There is an improductive period during the year. Animal raising is followed more for sentimental than economical reasons. There are few activities with which people earn money. The exemple of this «hill» illustrates sufficiently well the underdevelopment of the African countryside.Murunga est une colline (unité à la fois physique et humaine) du rebord oriental de la crête Congo-Nil (à plus de 2000 m). Son climat est frais et humide, mais aux pluies irrégulières. La végétation a reculé devant la densité de la population (environ 140 h/km2) qui augmente de 2 à 3 % par an. L'habitat est dispersé en groupes d'enclos reliés par des solidarités lignagères ou de voisinage. Son économie associe étroitement cultures et élevage : on distingue les terrains à flanc de coteaux, hiérarchisés en cultures plus ou moins fumées à la périphérie des enclos et en pâturages, et les terrains des fonds de vallée, ou «marais», que l'on draine à la saison sèche. La colline est répartie entre différents lignages, mais il existe des droits collectifs sur les pâturages. Les paysans, en famille et parfois aidés par des tenanciers, obtiennent trois séries de récoltes, mais l'usure des sols (malgré la fumure apportée par le bétail), rend difficile la période de soudure. L'élevage reste plus sentimental que rentable. Les activités de rapport sont très faibles.
