Les genres de vie traditionnels au Burundi

The Types of Traditional Ways of Life in Burundi. A heavily populated nation of the highlands of eastern Africa, Burundi subsists mainly upon traditional agriculture. The rural groups cultivate true countrysides where dwellings are among the most dispersed in the world and form two great subdivisions of peasants : the animal growers of the Tutsi tribe and the Hutu farmers. An extremely rigid hierarchical social order oversees the relationships between the two ethnic groups. The farmers engage in dry agriculture. But the intense degree to which the land is exploited, rain distribution and the altitude allow for two, even three harvests per year, mainly beans which constitute here the basic nourishment of the people. The animal growers raise large herds of long horn cattle, especially in the southern part of the country. This stock farming, where the animals are threatened with the whole train of tropical diseases, is clothed with sentimental aspects which mark the ways of Mfe of the Tutsi. In Burundi, farmers and animal growers possess highly typified ways of life.Pays très peuplé des hautes terres d'Afrique orientale, le Burundi vit essentiellement de l'agriculture traditionnelle. Les ruraux cultivent de véritables campagnes où l'habitat est un des plus dispersés du monde, et se subdivisent en deux grands groupes de paysans : les éleveurs d'ethnie tutsi et les agriculteurs hutu. Une organisation sociale extrêmement hiérarchisée régit les rapports entre les deux groupes. Les agriculteurs pratiquent une agriculture sèche. Mais l'intensification des cultures, la répartition des pluies et l'altitude permettent deux, voire trois récoltes par an, essentiellement de haricots qui constituent ici la base de l'alimentation. Les éleveurs poussent de grands troupeaux de bovins à longues cornes, surtout dans le sud du pays. Cet élevage, où les animaux sont menacés par tout le cortège des maladies tropicales, revêt des aspects sentimentaux qui marquent les modes de vie des Tutsi.
