Situation Looks Good Says Health Officer Dr. Peters

• Dr. William Peters believes that the influenza situation is improving.• There are nearly 300 instances of influenza at General Hospital, and of those 146 are soldiers. There were six deaths as of Tuesday.• There are 11 new cases among the student soldiers at the University of Cincinnati, down from the 30 new cases reported previously• Nearly 200 inmates in the County Infirmary have been moved to the City Infirmary, and the County Infirmary is available to health authorities.• Mayor John Galvin has sent to the council an ordinance transferring $600 from the contingent fund to the health fund as requested by Dr. Peters and President of the Board of Health George A. Fackler. The ordinance was passed under suspension of rules. This fund is to establish a night clinic in the downtown section of the city. An army officer will be placed in charge.• An ordinance to punish movie theaters for allowing ill children to remain in theaters was not acted upon. Many councilmen felt that the Health Department had authority in such matters.• Teachers will not be asked to continue visiting homes to distribute educational materials. Dr. Peters heard rumors that teachers were prepared to resign rather than risk exposure to influenza. Dr. Peters clarified that it had been a volunteer-only initiative. Dr. Randall Condon, Superintendent of Schools, stated that he had not heard such protests. School principals will continue to aid as Deputy Food Inspectors.• The Director of Household Arts, Miss Charlotte M. Ulrich, and Miss Mary Conway the Director of Continuation Schools have arranged for the manufacture of masks. • The United States Railroad Administration (through H.A. Worcester) has notified Dr. Peters that all rail lines north of the Ohio-Indiana Federal Railroad district will enforce regarding ventilation.• Fire Chief Barney and Superintendent of Streets Maag will work to clean and flush streets.Newspaper article
