Eight Deaths In Dayton; Another At Wright Field

• Even though 8 deaths were reported yesterday, Dr. Peters believes that the influenza-pneumonia situation is improving in Dayton. However, situation still “critical.” Citizens should observe all possible precautions. Take daily exercise. • Pneumonia, as a complication of influenza, has overtaken several citizens. Many deaths may follow as a result. • One death reported from Wright Field. Situation at the field is considered to be improved because many patients are showing signs of recovery and there are fewer cases. McCook field’s situation is likewise improved. • Dr. Peters: “It is possible that the reported deaths from influenza and kindred ailments may be slightly increased during the next few days, because the crisis has not been reached or passed in a great number of instances, but the aggregate reports from physicians all over the city tends to give the health department considerable encouragement. While there has been a slight lessening of the stringent regulations laid down by city officials, due to the orders from the state board of health, it is not to be expected that there will be any material lifting of the ban until next week, and not then unless the situation materially improves.”• A few cases of “suspected influenza” at Dayton State Hospital but they are not yet diagnosed. The staff is taking all precautions necessary to prevent an outbreak. • As of yesterday, St. Elizabeth hospital will devote all of its facilities to treatment of influenza. Only emergency patients will be an exception. St. Elizabeth’s has also opened another building. The hospital’s decision should not lead us to assume that the influenza epidemic is out of control. The patients simply could be better taken care of within the hospital, than at home. • People turned away from Hostess House at Wright Field. Outsiders not allowed on field during quarantine.
