New Steps Taken to Combat Flu

• Dr. R.G. Burns, chief of infectious diseases at the department of health, today began to survey housing conditions in the Hazelwood and Greenfield districts to determine new steps to combat influenza• Policy: a survey of housing conditions in the Fifteenth ward is ordered by health officials as increased reports of influenza in the area are known to have been taken in the last three days by physicians• Recent health reports indicate there have been 89 new cases of influenza with 36 of those coming from the Fifteenth ward• There were 73 cases of influenza reported yesterday, and 78 new cases reported Wednesday• Since the outbreak began last October, there have been 24,436 new cases of influenza reported• The large number of new cases is in contrast to the few cases reported to health authorities for the week ending Saturday; there have been 184 new cases reported• A recent tabulation of cases has found that influenza has centered on the Fifteenth ward and its surrounding area• Physician reports indicate influenza cases are grouped by families with two or more members bedfast, and a larger number of children ill with the disease since any time since the epidemic began in Pittsburgh last October• Sanitation and cleanliness will be inspection points to consider in homes during the survey by Dr. Burns• The Lincoln Park public school building was closed today due to more than 100 pupils and three teachers out ill with influenza• Mifflin township was closed this morning, also, where there are approximately 400 children in attendance• The building will be fumigated and readied for use next Monday morningNewspaper Article1
