Flu May Again Close Schools

• The board of education will be called into a special session with Dr. John B. Anderson, City Health Officer to discussion whether the schools should be closed again and to asses the situation• Enoch Engdal, president of the board of education said he was ‘besieged’ with phone calls add day yesterday from anxious parents and decided to have the board meet with Dr. Anderson this morning to consider what steps should be taken• Dr. J.E. Drake, Health Supervisor in Spokane Schools that the effect of reopening of the schools on the epidemic cannot be determined yet. Dr. Drake said, “It was our observation during the three days of school that there were very few cases among the school children.”• Dr. J.E. Drake indicated that tomorrow they will begin an active campaign of vaccination and administer it to children that have their parent’s permission and to members of the teaching staff if they desire• Influenza figures took the usual ‘weekend slump’ yesterday due largely to the fact that the health office is closed on Sunday and many fail to make reports to the health office after 1 p.m. on Saturday• Dr. A.E. Stuht, County Health Officer reports 178 cases in two weeks in the county• Bedding and help is needed badly at the emergency hospital• Dr. John B. Anderson, City Health Officer said, “The situation wouldn’t be half so serious if we could get nurses. Nurses should have no fear but that they will be paid well.”• Dr. Anderson attributes the increase in influenza figures to the fact that people are ignoring precautionary measures and that in convalescent stages, those recovering from the illness get out too soon. He added that he does not think that the lifting of the ban is to be blamed so much as the fact that the public at large ignores the warnings given to mingling crowds. He would like to see an active campaign started against sneezing, coughing, and spitting• In response to an appeal from the health office, the picture and vaudeville theaters yesterday flashed on the screens ‘flu’ warnings, asking patrons not to “sneeze, spit or cough unless in your handkerchief”• Influenza is disappearing at the county jail, where there were 40 to 45 patients.
