Quarantine Not Popular

• Six doctors went to the City Health Bureau and tried to convince employees that they (the doctors) had misdiagnosed several patients. Instead of influenza the patients were said to have tonsillitis, colds, or other maladies that do not warrant quarantine. The doctors were not successful in changing the recorded diagnoses. The Health Bureau continued to isolate all suspected influenza patients. • Dr. Parrish reports that only a breadwinner in a family will be able to come and go from the home. Dr. Parrish intends to keep patients quarantined until their fever has disappeared. The tentative period of quarantine is ten days, although in some cases the period of isolation might be shorter. • Dr. Parrish reports that many of the cases reported by doctors are light. Regardless of the severity of the illness, all patients diagnosed with influenza will be subject to quarantine. • Dr. Seeley urges that the anti-influenza serum is more widely used. He says that authorities in Seattle report that no persons who received the serum there developed influenza. • Twelve health deputies placarded the homes of the 159 cases that were reported yesterday. There were some “violent objections” but, on the whole, they experienced little trouble in the course of their duties.Newspaper article1
