Flu Quarantine Is Causing Complaint And Cases Increase

• There has been a great deal of protest by Portland citizens over the quarantine of influenza stricken homes (put into effect on Thursday) but no one has been arrested yet. • Some physicians have been accused of profiting from the epidemic by diagnosing all “respiratory ills” as influenza and thereby collecting extra fees. • The number of new cases has not decreased as it was expected to. The number reported today was above average for the past two weeks. • Some doctors visited the health office yesterday and asked to change the diagnosis of some of their cases. They claimed they had misdiagnosed colds as influenza. Their requests to change the diagnosis were “ignored.”• “The city health office announces that where a physician has honestly made a mistake it will be glad to assist him to rectify the error, but no consideration will be given those who seek only to relieve their parents of the onerous durance of the quarantine.” • Policemen helped health office employees distribute quarantine cards today.Newspaper article1
