Deaths Climb to 79; Day's New Cases 1,501 in Grippe Epidemic

• In the 24 hour period that ended at 11 pm last night, there were 1,501 new cases reported, in addition to 55 deaths from influenza, 15 deaths from lobar pneumonia, and 9 deaths from bronchial pneumonia.• In the 24 hour period previous to yesterday, there were 1,861 cases, including Sunday’s reported by mail, and 61 deaths.• In Buffalo, disease has not doubled in cases each day, as in other cities.• Health authorities are afraid that “over-confidence,” due to the fact the disease has not been as devastating, will result in an increase in spread.• Dr. Edward Clark from the state dept. of health commended Dr. Gram yesterday for how the disease had been handled in Buffalo.• Yesterday, Dr. Gram and his advisory council stressed the importance of masks in preventing spread of influenza.• Dr. Edward J. Meyer and the city hospital board are planning to set up tents near the City hospital, and to heat them if necessary for use.• In addition, there are plans to use either Elmwood Music hall or Broadway auditorium if necessary.• Volunteers from the Kiwanis club assisted in several arrests yesterday, leading to 8 salonkeepers being fined.• The Brewers’ exchange was notified of 68 saloonkeepers that may be violating the order, and the exchange set about trying to contact those individuals.• A liquor store man and pool room proprietor were also arrested.• Police reserves have been notified to help catch violators of the order.• A lawyer called Dr. Gram to inform him that the closing order against saloons could not be enforced, to which Dr. Gram replied, “Maybe it isn’t and maybe it is, but just drop into city court and see how they are paying fines.”• The health dept. received letters yesterday from several cemetery associations that graves could not be dug fast enough. Dr. Gram said he would locate help for this effort, contacting Charities Commissioner Hunt to get help from prisoners.• Mr. Hunt said that 10 out of 40 prisoners in a roadmaking gang were sick, but that he could probably send 10 to work on the graves problem.• Cemetery trustees said they may increase the wages if necessary, but would take it out of their own funds until things returned to normal.• Wedding are not prohibited, but wedding celebrations must be postponed.• Dr. Gram has heard from the health officer of Detroit that the city is beginning to become affected by influenza, and some public areas are being closed. He asked Dr. Gram what the results had been of closing measures.• Dr. Gram warned the public against becoming “too sanguine,” making sure not to relax any measures just because it seems like the epidemic is letting up.• He stresses the importance of masks again and again, and gives the example of one establishment that, if an employee becomes sick and does not wear a mask, that employee will not be paid while s/he is sick.Newspaper article1, 1
