Flu Serum Still Debate Subject

• Physicians are as divided as before as to the effectiveness of the serum for influenza but point to the example of state institutions for the debate• City health officer Kahn says, “There was never any evidence that vaccines prevent influenza and there isn't any more evidence that it makes cases milder.”• The State School for the Deaf inoculated all 480 students and 117 cases of influenza developed and 3 died• Superintendent J.W. Jones and Dr. Edward Reinart of the school advised all of the influenza cases were remarkably mild and there were few cases of pneumonia• The State School for the Blind inoculated all 190 students and 35 developed mild cases of influenza but there was no pneumonia• At both institutions, the epidemic has ended• In comparison, the Lancaster Boys' Industrial School was ravaged by the disease; no one was treated and out of a population of 1,200 a full 840 cases of influenza developed• The epidemic at the Lancaster Boys' Industrial School occurred before the serum was developed• Dr. Reinert believes the serum has done a lot of good at state institutions• Dr. Kahn reports little change in the city of Columbus as there were 14 deaths reported yesterdayNewspaper article1
