Assert Influenza Is A New Disease

• The present influenza is not the same as the known influenza; the “old” influenza has been found in very few cases of the present epidemic• Lab experts at the American Public Health Association agree the “new” influenza is not the “old” influenza • No one has isolated the present virus, or knows what it is at this time• Acting state health commissioner James E. Bauman says that every health officer seems to believe his own methods work best, so there is no agreement• After a meeting, Bauman says “I (am) assured that there is no way of stamping out the disease – that the best one can do is to string out the epidemic to enable the doctors to take better care of victims.”• Bauman does agree that a vaccine may prevent altogether or make cases milder but does not warrant an official recommendation from the state • Bauman believes the best thing yet developed is a remedy convalescent serum used by the Navy (more than the Army)• This convalescent serum is developed from a recovering patient's blood and administered to a patient with the same type of influenza • There is a detailed procedure for injected the serum directly into the bloodstream of a patient• The committee is expected to make a recommendation to delegates by report in a few days • Western College for Women has closed for the holiday and is expected to open again Jan. 7• Parents of the women of the college are asked to keep the women from unnecessary exposure as the college is currently free of the epidemicNewspaper article1
