Chronic wounds are characterised by prolonged inflammation, impaired re-epithelialisation and defective extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling. Fibroblasts play an important role in the closure of skin wounds, they replace and remodel the lost tissue and also influence both re-epithelialisation and angiogenesis.
