Introduction: The overweight and obese population fall within the range where they present factors that increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, including dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance or prediabetes, and central obesity. Objective: To analyze metabolic alterations and their relationship with body mass index. Methods: This study consists of a review in which scientific information from articles published in indexed journals such as PubMed and Scopus was collected. The search for information will utilize related terms provided by MeSH, as well as boolean operators "AND," "NOT," and "OR," which can be combined for more precise results.
