Introduction: the set of risk factors which may lead to ischemic heart failure, diabetes and diseases related to overweight is known as metabolic syndrome. Objective: to determine the presence of risk factors related to metabolic syndrome and its prevalence in old people. Material and methods: an observational, descriptive and cross sectional study was carried out in subjects from 60 years old or older attending to two doctors’ offices at "Luis Augusto Turcios Lima" university polyclinic in Pinar del Río.Results: hypertension and diabetes mellitus developed in the 60% of old people included in the investigation and coexisting in 19.2% of them.
