The complexity of legal language has often been pointed out by consumer organizations and legal experts alike in English-speaking as well as French-speaking countries. This has led to the publication of recommendations for expert legal drafters to implement plain langage by following a number of rules that include using "familiar" words and short sentences, or avoiding the passive. The overall goal of such recommendations is to make legal documents more readable for non-experts. The aim of this dissertation is to study how the language of legal texts is reformulated by organizations and government agencies, so that non-expert citizens can know their rights and make informed decisions.
